I thought most people on this forum did their own service work.
I never take mine in for service so I don't think that would effect whether I bought my bike from a local or not. Have 5 dealers within 50 miles or so of me and they all give the same discounts for parts and what not, so If one is cheaper on the sale by $1000 or more I would be foolish not to go with them. I don't buy that many parts from the dealerships anyway.

1) If you are getting a Custom Color there is a price controversy.
Find out what each dealer is actually saying MSRP is ???
The price on Harley's web site is the correct price.
The price in those brochures that a dealer will hand you, is somewhere over $800 higher (a misprint).

Dealers are using this to screw buyers over. Most dealers don't know there is a misprint.
MSRP for a Custom Color should be $24,899
I can't remember exactly what the brochure says, but its 25 something.

I guess what I'm saying make sure you get an actual dollar number off both dealer.
Not just "I'll take $900 off sticker". The stickers may be different.

My dealer screws people over with an inflated setup fee on the final paper work.
If you don't ask, they stick an extra $800 on it for people.

2) You will pay sales tax in/from your home state rate or wherever you can license it.

i agree to give the local shop a chance but lets not get crazy here...were ta;lomg almost 2000, thats not a small amount of money. Maybe my theory is different, but I went to 5 local shops here in chicago trying to buy a bike, and only 1 would take my cash for the bike, that was 04=08 on a 08 Street Glide. Parts can be bought from anywhere, Chicago ALWAYS gives 20 percent off parts, you might have to wait but its 20 percent. I will never have my bike serviced where I bought it, and again maybe Im in the minority cause there are several dealerships within 40 miles of me, but if you try to screw me after I give you a second chance to match someone elses price then you are done! IT is 2009 and customer service is what gains and keeps businesses going! IF you cannot hang then sell hondas! So after this long rant, I would give them one chance to meet that price and if they dont walk out! the economy sucks even for HD, and a bike is another notch in their belt, and they can tell milwaukee they sold another one. The money is made in the service and parts department, but if the sales guy is gonna let you walk for 1800, tell him see ya!

Give your dealer a chance to match.

Then take your best deal.

Buy your parts online and get 20% off every day.

Do your own service or find a good indy.

Good advice, I went to only one other dealer and he was $2,700 (otd as they say) cheaper on trade. I went back to my local dealer and told him I was going to trade for this price. I could either trade here or with the other guy. They didn't like it, but they matched the price.

You will need to have the other deal on paper, or they won't believe you.........and why should they? people try to screw dealers just like dealers try to screw people. Just not all the time, like dealers do, is all I'm saying'

Oh, and remember you can get 20% off all parts and accessories any day and everyday at Chicago or Zanotti HD. They will even deliver it for you.

I wouldn't think the service department talks to the sales department to try and remember who bought their bike there or elsewhere. What do they do about people who move into the area and bought their bike in their previous hometown?

My advice is to work with local dealer and push for the better offer for as long as possible. If you don’t give them the chance to earn your business…

I am not a dealer, I am just saying I have seen people get screwed over by a dealer cause the customer went to a non local dealer.
What horse did you just ride in on? You think the "dealer" will even know who he is when he goes in for parts or service? Think they will treat him better? Man I want what your smoking. Dealers could care less and most don't even know who they deal with unless that same person has been coming in for years and has personally gotten to know them. I reallly never say one of the salesman selling parts either or doing service so who's gonna know? You gotta go where you get the best deal...They all have the same option up front and his local one lost. Parts can be ordered online so who needs specials and service, well you just have to hope your bike is better off when it leaves than when it went in. Use common sense and a bucks a buck.

$500.00, IMO, isn't a big price to pay to keep the local dealership around and have a relationship from the beginning. I think they'll do a LOT more to help you out of you bought your bike from them.
