Default Great save by service writer

Two part story

Took my bike in to get the rear brake light switch replaced. Brakes lights were sticking on. Then on the way home, felt the pedal get a little soft. Next stop, pedal went to the floor, no brake. Got home on the front brakes and when I got there, found that when you pushed on the rear brake, brake fluid would shoot out of the back of the switch. One of the mechanics said it was the second one in two days and he was expecting a recall. The warranty paperwork said the switch was $20. If Harley has marked it up and it's still only $20, it must really be a cheap piece of crap to begin with.

Now the great save part, as the service writer started to roll it to the back, he pushed it forward, stopped, got a strange look on his face, rolled it back and forth, and told me I had a wheel bearing going out in the front. I couldn't believe he could tell from that but sure enough, it had been spitting ball bearings out and was about to let go. I had no idea. He saved me from what could have been something ugly. All that with two weeks to go before the warranty runs out.

My thanks to Duane at San Jacinto Harley in Pasadena Texas.

Watch your rear brake swith and your front wheel bearings.

FYI - I had roughly 41,000 miles on it when both failed.

Nice save by that guy. Hope you gave him the kind of thanks that'll keep him watching out for you. Aside from a normal "tip" gesture, perhaps a kindly worded praise letter to the owner. Might sound corny, but I recently heard from a guy that says his place still values that kind of thing. As it should.

Congrats on catching that before something want awry.

the same brake light switch at an auto parts store is about $6. i would think the switch is bought for about $3 by the parts store. $20 is not cheep. hd gets their switches from the same place as the parts store. the only difference is the mark up and the box it comes in.

We should all be as lucky as you to have such a great service department.
