Default Rear Brake Lamp Switch

I just got back from picking up my scoot from the dealer. They did my 15,000 mile service. I was a little surprised when they told me they had to replace the rear brake lamp switch.[&:]

Thing is, they also replaced it when they did the 10,000 mile service! [sm=confused06.gif]

Now, I'm thinking it's one of two possibilities...I actually have had two bad switches or they're just scamming me. I doubt it's a scam due to the fact the switch was only $22 (not much profit there!) and they didn't charge me to install it.

The service manager (who's done such nice things as re-adjust my clutch multiple times for free) told me they only replace 2-3 a year.

Anybody else have to replace their switch twice in 5,000 miles?

Uh....still have the original after 130,000 miles on the '98 Electra Glide. Never a problem....

If there is no problem....replacing is stupid. This sensor either works or does not work....so it rules out preventative maintenance.

Does that mean you have been riding around, before each scheduled maintenance, without brake lights?
It would be a good idea if you start checking the brake light, before you take off on a ride. I know I don't check my lights often enough.

Oh, so NOW ya tell me!

I know (I've KNOWN all along) that I SHOULD be checking stuff like the brake lamp function. I guess I've just been lazy about it due to the fact that other than this switch, I haven't had any problems with this bike.

I promise to do better!

I had both switches go out on my bike at about 50,000 miles. I replaced them both myself. I took the bike for an inspection 2 or 3 months later and both switches were out again! So, it is very possible. The first time they were replaced with MOCO parts and the second was with aftermarket parts. After 5,000 miles, they seem to be working OK. I do check them on a regular basis now. Riding without brake lights and not knowing it is scary...

What are rear brakes for?

I'm guilty of not checking myself...I usually tap the front brake just to make sure the bulb is good..never really gave a thought to the rear switch..

Thanks for the reminder
