If you think about it, the combustion in the cylinder is a chain reaction starting at the plug and moving out from there. If there is too much air and not enough fuel the chain reaction does not make it far enough to burn all of the fuel. I gets into the exhaust and then when the unburned fuel hits the hot pipe, it starts another chain reaction and lean pop. It happens on decel because that's when the engine is running the most lean. At least that's how it was explained to me.
Interesting. I run an '09 with a PCV and Rinehart slip-ons. Not sure why it works, but I added fuel to the 0% column in my map and it fixed the problem.
+1 I did the same thing to my '07 Ultra with a PC-V added 7% more fuel in the 0% throttle position column from 1750 to 5000 rpm and 99% of the decel pop was eliminated.

I have been reading alot of post on different forums about decel popping and it seems like half say it's caused be a lean condidtion and half say a rich condition, a few say exhaust leak. Lean makes no sense to me at all. Anyone want to chime in on this subject? I am trying to get to the bottom of it concerning a bike with stock a/c, drag pipes, carbs. Thanks
Decel popping can be caused by all three, exhaust leaks, lean or rich condition. Doc1 explains it in this thread and many other threads in these forums.
Ok, I have decel popping and bluing of the head of the right hand muffler.
I purchased the 06 Ultra used with 22,000 miles. It has stage 1 A/C that was remapped, Wild Pig slipon pipes.
What do i need to do.
I have had the bike to the indy and he looked it over and said, "Ride it & Enjoy".
Remember, I was asking about a carbed bike so forget the fuel management devices. Once again I see it's basically split between too rich and too lean. I guess it's a toss up.

Forgive my CRS, but did you do anything different lately?
When the decel popping occurred on my 00 Honda Shadow ACE (carbed by the way), I was running lean on the read head due to the installation of Cobra Classics pipes, so..... If you have changed to add more air flow/exhaust flow, give 1/4 turn on your rear head adjustment in the rich direction...
I have some pop on decel, worse when i dont let it warm up (?) sometime intake back fire when she's being a beotch... took it in, new plugs, no leaks, re-mapped, still a little pop on decel, still intake fire when she's being a beotch.... I go thru more plugs, but theyre cheap enuff.
Sometimes I pop when I accel, Moma doesnt like it very much.

This is an '02 ACE that I just picked up really cheap, it has Cobra drag pipes and stock a/c. Going to give your advice a try, thanks.
