Default Popping on decel

I have been reading alot of post on different forums about decel popping and it seems like half say it's caused be a lean condidtion and half say a rich condition, a few say exhaust leak. Lean makes no sense to me at all. Anyone want to chime in on this subject? I am trying to get to the bottom of it concerning a bike with stock a/c, drag pipes, carbs. Thanks

The lean issue didn't make sense to me especially when I was told it was cause by fuel making it to the header pipes and exploding... I just know when I richen'ed up my rear heard the decel popping went away. Keeping mind that was my situation with a 2000 Honda Ace though.

I have not had to deal with an exhaust leak, so I cannot speak on that, but if there was I think that could cause a lean situation though...

Exhaust backfires are caused by a lean condition, an exhaust leak, or timing issues. Intake backfires are caused by a rich condition or timing issues.

Decel popping is not a backfire. It's caused by a minute amount of unburnt fuel burning in the exhaust when it hits the hot pipe. That's why you don't hear it when the engine is cold. My RK doesn't have it and my Heritage does after having the stage 1 done. I could have had it tuned out but I decided I like it and kept it.

From what I gather {kinda in the same boat you are} it's a rich fuel mixture and a timing issue. My last bike was fixed with the timing. It was carberated. By the sounds of the efi bikes they get the fix with a new map. Sorry

Interesting. I run an '09 with a PCV and Rinehart slip-ons. Not sure why it works, but I added fuel to the 0% column in my map and it fixed the problem.

A few months ago, when I was looking for another fuel management device, I took an online "tuning" quiz at one of the product sites. One of the questions was what caused decel popping. I had always thought it was unburned fuel from a too rich condition. I failed. The answer was too lean.

It works because the additional fuel delivered by the PCIII enriches the otherwise too lean charge enabling it to combust in the cylinder instead of collecting in the exhaust to create a pop.

Had drag pipes on my 07 1200C and also had the popping on decel. It was only after installing baffles in the exhaust that the popping went away. Very inexpensive fix.
