I looked in the service manual to see what you guys are talking about. Does that bearing rotate like the wheel bearings or just move slightly as the rubber fingers are compressed and released by acceleration and deceleration and center the pulley?
Brought the bike in for a warranty replacement of my chrome rear wheel on my 08 SG. It seems the chrome didn't like being on the wheel. A chrome part will be replaced on a one part, one time deal, under warranty as long as it's purchased at time of delivery. So now I have used up my one time chrome replacement. But back to the issue. Tech comes out to me and says you need a bearing. I thought he meant for the wheel. I told him everything had been ordered prior to me coming in. He says Not for the wheel for the IDS. He proceeded to show me the pulley he had removed to show me the bearing which had come apart. There was no noise , no tell tale sign, nothing. Had it not been there It very well could have seized up on there. He told me he had seen a bunch of these.
Oh well. Glad it was caught!
Overdoo can you post some additional info? Mileage at occurence, maybe build date, and if the Tech said anything else about this being a common problem and if there is any type of recall, etc.
Thanks in advance. Glad yours was caught in time.
Isolated Drive Sprocket. Standard on 08 and later, accessory for 07
So does my 07 FLHR have one-seems to be a common issue or concern-I've only got 3k on the 07 I recently purchased-do I need to be concerned given there seems to be no warning signals?

Unless the previous owner installed the IDS, your scoot doesnt have one.
I havent installed one on my FLHRS and never will; just something else to fail is the way I see it. If they were "needed" HD would have recalled.

If you bought it used then it could have one, if you bought it new then unless you had it put on ya don't got one!
Been through two rear changes and working pretty hard on the third but no problems so far.
I had the IDS installed on mine at 2,000 miles. Did my last tire change on my 07 at 37,500 and everything was fine at that point. Getting ready to change out rear tire again, this time with 51,000. Will take another look then. Might go ahead and change it just for peace of mind!.
I think a lot of the IDS bearing problems come from how the bearing was pressed in. If it was pressed in properly there seems to be less issues. If it was beat in with 2X4 or pressed in using the inner race there seems to be more problems with bearing failure. This is from a tech at my local HD dealer. He said it took MOCO a few months to get dealers the proper size adapter to press in the bearings so people used what they had to install the bearing.
