Default Adjusting Highway Pegs

Anyone else have a problem getting your highway pegs adjusted just right so they're even?

Man, I think I said more filthy words doing that than any other motorcycle related project (maybe with the exception of getting the wiring through the Airwing luggage rack).

Anyway, I must give a solid recommendation for the Küryakyn Tour-Tech Cruise Mounts with the ISO-wing mini boards. Once you get them adjusted right, they are awesome!

With lowers it is a little harder. But without lowers this is what I did. Find the sweet spot for one side. Take a piece of yarn or string and tie it right above the mount on the engine guard and then tie it to the other side of the engine guard. Measure from the top of the engine guard to the string on the side you have mounted. Measure as close to the outside of the guard as you can. Then you have your measurement for the other side. Slide the string into that position and mount the other side right below it.

Helps a lot if your bike is level on a center stand or jackstand. Like Garemlin said find a sweet spot for on side. Then measure down or up from a known fixed location and mark the same spot on the other side of the crashbar with a little blue tape. Then leave the adjustments just semi-tight so you can easily move them around. Make sure to wear the boots you ride with. When you are all said and done, have your wife come out to verify if they are equal and perfect. My wife can tell if a picture is a quarter bubble out of plumb from a 1/4 mile away.

BTW. I have the Kury Offset Longhorns on my Ultra. Lots of adustment options and I can keep the pegs REAL low which is where I like-em.

I don't concren myself if they're even, my right knee is due for a total replacement, so I have the peg where I can stretch it out more than the left leg. Got to be comfortable. they are even on the crash bars, just not in position.

I have the same mounts (short arms) and I love them, and I have the dually pegs instead of the iso wings. Great pegs too.

Now, to answer your question. I position the 1st bracket at the height I want it to be and I don't fully tighten the bolt attaching the peg to the bracket.
Then I run a long wood ruler from the top of the bracket where the 1st peg is mounted to the other side of the crash bar. Using a level, I know where to position the second bracket to be perfectly level with the first one. When the 2 brackets are fully positioned vertically, I take care of the pegs, first in terms of lateral position (I like mine to be pinched in instead of being perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the bike) and second in terms of horizontal position (I like the far end of the peg to be slightly higher than the near end). It takes a few minor adjustments to have them perfectly positioned and perfectly symmetrical and I complete the job by tightening all bolts and screws.

Good ideas. Definitely put it up on the jack and wear your boots. I used a ruler and a Sharpie to mark the adjustments. Only had to set them up once.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help and ideas. Part of the problem with these Kury ones is that there are so many ways to adjust them besides just the height on the guards. Every other bike I've had, I used an HD branded set. I think I got them just about right, though.

And Clint55: You're absolutey right about the wife thing. Mine bought me a laser level for hanging pictures for Christmas last year so she "doesn't have to keep correcting me so much."

I was going nuts trying to get mine even - I finally asked my wife to square the bike up so I could have a look at them "straight" -- And over it went onto the right side. In the garage. Only a foot from the wall.

Boy, it takes a little HP to pick one of those things up when you have no room for leverage...

Anyway - Ended up getting a center stand and all was well. Won't let my wife on the bike alone anymore.
