Helmet laws are enforced and the reflective tape is rarely, unless you ask them to by being an a$$.

I wear non-DOT approved helmet and have encountered quite a few roadblocks. They never inquire or inspect on or about my helmet, but they do CHECK for drunks, inspections, real loud pipes and bad tires. Always had a good rapport with them when checking out on me as they pat my back and tell me, "You're good to go". I go easy on the throttle when I take off, LOL.

Hey AUSTEX ---- I live in upstate PA, about 1/2 hr ride, south of NY. I wear one of those novelty helmets in PA. Been in NY alot with it & have never been bothered. I've heard that as long as you're not doing stupid crotch-rocket stuff, they'll leave you alone, but maybe I've just been lucky! I don't know! I've had troopers & locals go past me quite alot. I have an EG Classic, and I always have the DOT helmet in the tourpak anyway. I wouldn't worry about the reflective tape thing --- never heard of that. Maybe there's a NY State Trooper on here who might tell you what they think. Maybe it depends on the part of NY in which you're riding, maybe it depends on the trooper's mood --- if the trooper just had a traffic stop where somebody gave him/her a tough time because THEY were speeding, hard to tell. Guess I'd say, buy a DOT half helmet & wear it. You don't have to wear full-face.

In the last five or so years I've had my helmet checked three times. Once at a bike specific road block (safety inspection), once just pulled over on a ride along a country road, and once while getting a NYS inspection for my bike. Cop came in for some parts for his bike. Walked over to mine and wanted to see my helmet. Started in on the skid lid discussion being non-DOT. Made comments about people putting DOT stickers on skid lids. My helmet is a ACC DOT. NO big deal, just my experience.

Wow thanks guys for the information. I feel like I am going to be very welcome in NY. I was up in Saratoga back in July checking out the area. It was absolutely beautiful and a welcome break for the 90+ days of >100 degree temperatures here in Austin. I really am looking forward to getting out and riding the area next spring.

Thanks to those that gave me a heads up on the NY gun laws which defiantly are more restrictive than Texas laws. Looks like I’m going to need to leave a good portion my collection behind in the safe keeping of one of my buds.

hemlet laws are the least of your problems.

I've lived here all my life and NY has much to offer....great location, great geography, many good people and of course, great canadian beer. unfortunately, it is also over-taxed, over-legislated, and ultra liberal. oh, did I mention the weather? I think you'll have some growing pains coming from Texas. helmet laws are just one example of how the braintrust here tries to legislate everything under the sun, including personal safety and responsibility. I won't bore you with the details, and I'm sure others will chime in after reading this. you can make your own judgement but I'd be interested to see what you think after you've lived here for awhile.

I think they should change our license plates to read: NY - The NO FUN STATE

For the most part really only have to worry about hicaps and "assault weapons" config's. Also, NY doesn't have the silly restrictions on where you can carry like TX.
