So I have just about accepted the fact that my company is going to transfer my Texan *** from Austin to Saratoga Springs, NY. Today I found out that NY has a mandatory helmet law with a reflective tape requirement no less! For real man? I mean come on. My ride time is already going to be cut in half by the weather, now I have ride around with a brain bucket on my head.
Those of you living in NY, is this law really enforced?
I would rather not hear from you safety first nanny state types!
Which part, the helmet or the reflective tape? First of all, any state requiring a helmet is going to aggressively ticket anyone without one. Enforcement as to whether a helmet is really DOT approved or not tends to be far less enforced. Take a look at what borders NY also as far as helmets are concerned. Absolutely everywhere in Canada, not required in Pennsylvania. Quit whinning about being transfered-at least you have a job to be transferred to. And I will add that there is some great riding in NY.
God Bless Texas Once I Leave Florida Heading West on I-10 Have to wear a Helmet through Bama, Miss, Weeziana, Once Hit the Tx Border am good to go without a Helmet all the way to AZ ...
Now you see there you go. It doesn’t take very long on these types of forums for someone to chime in with unnecessary BS and ruin a thread. K&J if you interpret my post as a complaint about being transfered then it is you that has an issue. My main objection to my being transferred is the fact that I will never convince my 85 year old mother to move to NY due to the cold. As such she will be left alone here in Texas and will more than likely now need to move into assisted living. Which will kill her. So next time you might want to think a bit before running off at the mouth. Otherwise thanks for the information.
Will, I will be back ASAP. More than likely 4 years or so when my youngest gets out of college.

Ihave never been snagged for not having reflective tape. Cops will ticket and maybe impound if you don't have a DOT helmet. Saratoga springs is a beautiful area. Learn to ski or buy a snowmobile for the winter.
Austex, yep, they really do enforce the helmet law....used to ride there a lot (I'm in Mass, another helmet **** state). I have never had an issue with NY regarding the reflective tape deal (Vermont has the same rule) but then I'm not a resident so maybe they just don't bother folks from out of state...dunno. They also in NY have these "mandatory" checkpoints from time to time (usually associated with a rally or some large MC event like Americade.). These checkpoints are called "safety checkpoints" and only target motorcycles. They stop ALL bikes and hassle your ***. I quit going to NY when they started that un-American bullshit! Seems like more of Hitler's Germany to me, and any cop who pushes this kind of crap should be ashamed of themselves! If someone is breaking a law, go out and track his *** down, but just because he's on a motorcycle, he's not a criminal (yet) so leave him alone! America, and her freedoms, is disappearing quickly! And we all sit back like sheep and let it happen!
Yup they enforce the helmet law. Don't test it out...
As for the reflective tape. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with it. Wouldn't worry about that.
Saratoga is a beautiful area. You'll get to ride the Adirondacks and Lake George region. Beautiful riding country. Americade is in June in Lake George and the area is packed with bikes. Great time. Welcome to NY.
Hey Austex - I'm 2 1/2 hours west of Saratoga Springs, NY. Law enforcement doesn't joke around about helmets! You'll definitely have to wear one. I don't know anything about the reflective tape? Never had any reflective tape on any of mine. They have started cracking down on non DOT skid lids over the last couple of years. I've had my ACC DOT half helmet checked a couple of times.
Riding season is about 7 months long, unless you don't mind riding in salt. Some beautiful riding around Saratoga Springs area and throughout NY, including nearby states. Cool weather riding isn't all bad, especially in the Fall! Beautiful scenery.
