Default Zumo 559 & Mapsource

I just got a Zumo 550 yesterday. It took me a while to get the maps unlocked but I finally figured it out.

I was using an old Garmin emap with some older Mapsource.

The Mapsource software with the 550 really sucks. It is difficult to get a real backroads trip to come out how you want. Yes, I know how how to move the route around but sometimes it has a mind of its own and you just can't get it 100 percent right.

Is there any other mapping software that will work with the 550?

Thanks for any info.

I agree, not only that I had a trip to the great north woods of new hampshire and it tried to get me to go down a road that hasn't been there for over 70 years!

Try going to "edit", "preferences", "routing" & set "calculation style" to "shorter distance". You still have to zoom in & pick specific roads, but it does a better job of personalizing routes that way. Remember, it's still a human produced program & will always have glitches.

Go to www.zumoforums.com. They have a tutorial that is helpful. Mapsource is not very user friendly. Do a search, someone probably has already had you questions answered.

I have been reading the zumo forum for a couple of weeks now and it does seem like most people see the same thing I do. The worst part is moving a route around a little. It sometimes has a mind of it's own. I have messed with the settings and it seems there is not a setting that will work for an entire route and let you easily modify a route.

The older version that I used with the eMap worked great. I guessed they "improved it" to not work as well. I was hoping someone knew of another mapping program that might work with the Zumo. I know you can use Google maps but I read where they don't line up well with the Mapsource maps.

I guess you just have to take it for what it is and hope the software will improve over time.

Have any of you used the Harley Trip Planner? I just tried it online and it works a lot easier than the Mapsource program, if fact I liked it a lot.

I have not downloaded it to my GPS yet since I am at work, but it allows you to save it and get it later.

It was very easy to use.

I use Harley Ride Planner. It is easier to use, but has some drawbacks.

1. Do not use the auto sync. Save the file manually and copy it to your GPS.

2. Every waypoint you put on the map will be a waypoint on the GPS. So GPS will give directions to every waypoint.

3. Since Harley and Garmin use different maps, the waypoints are usually off the road a little. (GPS will tell you to turn left for 100ft to reach waypoint), just drive by it and the GPS will look for the next one.

Tips.

1. Use minimum about of waypoints.

2. Put waypoints in between crossroads, so you don't confuse waypoints with turns.

3. At turns put waypoints after the turn so you know it's a turn coming up and not a waypoint.

4. Zoom into every waypoint to make sure its on the road and on the correct side of a divided highway.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that the Harley Zumo had different makes. That seems odd but not a surprise.

Where do you save the routes to? I am at work so don't have it available. Is there a route folder?

I forgot to ask something. Once you save the map to the Zumo, can you download it to Mapsource and play with it?
