Tuning Question - Long winded
I just returned from a 4000 mile trip from central Florida to update NY with one of my friends (he rides an 07' ultra, 103ci kit w/SE253 cams) I run 96", PCV mapped my Jamie for the big sucker and V&H MO. I averaged 37.1 MPG, with a low of 32, and a high of 45. I am no way disatisified with these numbers considering my driving style, and the performance of the bike.
My buddy consistantly got a couple of MPG more than I did, but there are some details that explain why. He is about 50 lbs lighter than I am, has the above motor advantage, and our speedo's we're both off, mine worse than his (compared to the GPS) My unit reads 2-4 MPH higher than the GPS, and most fuel stops (~165 mi between tanks) yielded I went about mile further than him. So here is my question, and would like your opinions.
Would you have a Dyno run done to improve performance? I think I'm doing pretty good, and am trying to justify the expense of tuning.
At 37.1 mpg, each mile is costing you (assuming 2.50 a gallon for gas) .067 cents.
At 39.1 mpg, each mile is costing you (assuming 2.50 a gallon for gas) .064 cents.
So assumin you got dyno tuned and picked up those 2 extra MPG, and assuming your dyno tune costs ~$240 (3 hour minimum around here at $80 an hour), you'd reach breakeven on your dyno tune money after riding about 69,629 miles.
That said, it's always going to be your bike and your money, so spend it anyway you like!

However, if you are wanting to add mileage before stopping then it may be worth it.
On back/mountain roads at 55 I get 45-47 mpg
On the interstate running 80 mph or more I get 38 mpg.
With a 5 gallon tank @ 38 mpg I can still get 175 miles comfortably
I'm okay with that myself.
