Default HD Police...why so cheap???

Hey all. I'm new to the board as you see. I want to buy a bike and kind of like the Honda 1300, but am also looking at the Kings. Price is a big factor that comes into play. Now, I know the "resale" value is better on the HD, but once acquired, I don't sell assets.

Anyways...Why does it appear that the police model of the Road Kings are so much cheaper than the regular model?

Don't know, but it appears to me that the Police motorcycles are the best deals out there. I have two friends who bought low mileage Road Kings and they are sweet. Go for it.

So your suggesting I stay away from the Honda, huh.

Another point in question. I don't ride yet...I've ridden many quads and things of that nature (not that they make very good substitutes.) But the point is I can shift. Also, I do a lot of bicycling (1500 miles per year on a mountain bike, but sticking the roads) so I dont feel I would be nervous by adding a motor. Is a bike like this too big for a beginner? Everyone says don't learn stick shift on a V8 mustang...that didn't stop me, nor did it inhibit my ability to drive. Is it similar...or am I way off???

The Police bikes can be a great deal. However, you do need to upgrade the rear tire to a tire rated for two up riding as well as upgrade the seat to allow for two up riding (if someone rides with you). Plus the styling has to be upgraded as well if looks are very important to you. I think most of the police bikes come with an oil cooler and a hotter cam setup than standard model bike.

These models are cheaper because the MOCO discounts them. Only active or retired LEO's can buy these bikes new. The rear tire is made for only a single rider. The cams are the same as other models. Anyone can buy a used Police bike.

Beat the hell out of them......I can neither confirm nor deny that I did 0-100mph power runs "to clean out the carbon build-up", dropped it over a hundred times, kicked and cussed it, rode through mud, ditches, trees, sand, etc.

I learned to ride on the street on a Kawasaki K1000P (police special), which included a 7 day police solo rider course. I would think you need to worry more about your size and the physical size of your 1st bike. I'm 6'2", so starting on a sporster would have been a bad choice for me. If you are over 6' you will tire of the smaller size, like so many of my friends. They were selling them within a year. I sold my 2001 Dyna Super Glide to a first time rider and he handled it without a problem....but I was teaching him to ride (I'm also a MSF RiderCoach). It's all how you conduct yourself. Buy a decent used bike, and trade it in a couple years later on something newer after you are comfortable and have completed the MSF course and license testing done. Lot of nice used bike in the Trader with lots of added accessories and great prices compaired to the dealer. Plus you may not have a warranty to worry about and can tweak and add parts as you see fit.

the 2002 and up use the same engine as the civilian bikes. an oil cooler would be an add on. i have a 2001 FLHPI that i was fortunate to buy brand new. it has the bigger cams and higher compression. it also is sinister blue and diamond ice (Birmingham.AL police colors). got it for $15,995 in jan 2002. the used ones are less costly due to the way the factory depreciates them. i have seen them in new orleans for $10,500 with less than 2K miles on them.

Because they are well used usually. Also Harley gets special deal from corporate on pricing.
