Original owner, 2008 Street Glide with 45,500 miles, spot lights and PC III added within 60 days of purchase. Out for a ride and about ˝ hour into it I look down and notice my battery light is on, I look at the volt meter and it shows 11 volts, I look back at the battery light and notice the check engine light is on as well.
I turn off the cruise control and the spot lights (I leave the radio on) and turn around for home. After 6-10 minutes the lights go out and the volt meter is up to 13.5, I turn the spot lights and cruise back on. After 10 minutes or so I notice the volt meter is back at 11 but no warning lights.
I leave everything turned on and 10 minutes or so later the volt meter is back to 13.5. I pull into a local independent and he checks the battery for me; it is green with a load and it shows that it is getting 13.7 volts with the engine running at 2,000 RPM.
I’ll go back Monday when the HD guy is there and see if there is a trouble code but in the mean time; any ideas?
I rode the bike last night and I could not get the problem to repeat, the battery and charging system check didn’t reveal any problems. On my way home from the shop I had the voltage drop off to 11.5, after 5+ minutes the battery and check engine lights came on.
Check all the wires down by the voltage regulator and make sure they are not rubbing anywhere. I had the exact same issue last year and after checking the connections and making sure they weren't binding anywhere the issue went away. I installed an oil cooler and might have pinched one.
