Default Engine just quits?

First post, just found the forum, looking forward to good advice and reading. Have a 2005 Ultra that I bought used from the dealer 10 months ago with 21,000 km (13,000 miles) on it. Have put on 14,000 km since then. Engine has the stage 1 intake kit on it, but otherwise stock. Love the bike, great ride, very comfortable and handles well.

The problem I am having is that the engine has literally just shut down on me in traffic three times now. Twice it happened on my trip to Sturgis this year, each time I made it over to the side of the road, it would not restart until I shut down the ignition, and then when I turned the ignition back on it restarted and ran fine. When I got back home I had our dealer check it, they found no problem.

It had been about 5,000 km since the last time it happened to me and then yesterday morning on the way to work it happened all over again. Engine just shut down, still had lights and guages (and no I hadn't accidentally hit the kill switch). Coasted over to the side of the road, tried to start, starter wouldn't even engage. Shut down the ignition, turned it back on, and the engine started fine.

Anybody else experience this or have ideas about what the cause is? Dealer says they haven't run into it before, and that they can really only find a fault if it is still happening.

Thanks.

Dealer said they didn't find any codes, I didn't check myself at the time (don't know how actually!)

Could be a bad main circuit breaker.

You can do a search of the forum, this may help.

I was gonna say faulty ignition switch but you still have lights so that's probably not it.

Mine did the same thing. They fixed it under the extended warranty.

The dealer ran a fuel pressure check and I was losing pressure at idle.Above idle it was in spec..

They replaced the check valve assy in the tank.It had a crack and was causing fuel to leak back and the lose of pressure stalled the engine.

Was done last April,no problem since.

oh yeah w/ me also. I stumbled onto mine by moving the check valve going down the road after it just shut off...and veroom, fires right back up and off to the races. replaced the check valve and line to the throttle body (can be bought as one unit) and never had a problem since. Good luck.

SandyMike, I have had the same experience with engine shutting off.

Bought a cherry, low miles '06 RG in March. Previous owner advised it quit on him on the hiway. Dealer replaced battery and said it was fixed. It wasn't. Bike has quit on me, always out on the hiway, during lengthy trip in July to CO, UT, and AZ. Always the same - it just shuts off instantly. Restarts fine after turning handlebar and fork switches off then back on.

Thru trial and error, found that if I did not use the handlebar ignition switch, just leave it on, did not seem to have the problem.

My indy mechanic advised most likely bad contacts in the handlebar switch. We took it apart, sprayed it good with electronic parts cleaner, and that seems to have solved the problem. Have been on a number of 1 to 3 day trips, plus around town, and seems to be ok now.

This might be another option for you to look at.

I have an "06 EG Classic. Mine would cut off when it was cold. Dealer said it needed a screaming eagle download. Afterwards, it still cut off. I went to another dealer and they said I needed a power commander for Stage 1 and SE pipes. they installed it, and it has been working great since.

Since you have guages and lights but the starter won't turn over when this happens it's got to be either the kill switch or a wire/fuse that feeds to the switch. Pull the fuses and clean them up thoroughly, maybe slightly bend the contacts on the fuses so they make better contact and replace the kill switch. Once you've done this if it still has the problem it has to be a wire problem. Oh yeah, don't use the kill switch to shut down the bike, use the ignition switch. It has much better contact points and is made for repeated use, the kill switch should only be used for emergencies or if your parking on a hill and need your right hand on the brake lever to hold the bike.
