Default On the road security

I've had my e-glide for about a month now and the mrs. and I are looking forward to some short road trips. I'm kinda nervous about leaving my ride outside after dark. What are some things that you guys do to protect your beloved (your bike I mean) whilst staying over night at a motel?

I know about the siren and pager but what about where to park, using a Honda cover and the like?

Get a long chain, hook it to your belt beside your knife, keep a loaded semi-auto in your boot holster, sleep with one eye open and pray!

Make sure you're insurance is paid up. Then go and have a good time. If someone wants it bad enough, they'll take it no matter what you do. I've been at it for a while now, left it outside at quite a few motels, some good and some not so good, and never have had any trouble.

Now,,,,,go have fun!!

Ditto, and to add, I use a disc lock with the siren feature and get a downstairs room with parking in frt of the door.

I agree there is no full proof safeguards. That being said, there are some good practices that reduce your exposure to theft.

I always park in a well lighted area. When at a hotel, I'll always park as close to the front registration area as possible visible to the hotel staff. I will park headfirst into the parking space, leave it in first gear, lock the handlebars, and set the alarm. By parking headfirst into the parking space, any would be thief would have to manage picking up the front end of my heavy bagger, and wheel it around before dragging it into a trailer/van/ or whatever.

When traveling solo, I will also cable lock the back tire to the front tire. When traveling with others, we cable lock the bikes together.

BTW, whether just lucky or whatever, so far (30+yrs), I've not had any problems. 2 years ago I went to check on my scoot and the alarm was going off. Don't know what scared them off, but nothing was damaged.

I have been to several rallies.....and stayed in motel rooms. I lock the fork and turn my security alarm on and cover it with a generic rain cover. I have stayed in motels in Myrtle Beach and Washington DC and have had no problems. Yesterday I purchased and installed the Smart Siren II. I hope that will also be a deterant. But bottom line is..............if it gets stolen I have insurance. I have done my part ......if someone wants to steal it eventually they will.

Go to a yard sale or flea market and look for an old handgun holster. Hang it from your handlebars. I would have second thoughts seeing that trinket hanging there.

And pay attention to the above posts too.

Good advise from everyone .. but those talking about insurance, don't forget to get extra insurance for all your after-market and HD upgrades. Don't take it for granted that it will all be covered. I did with Progressive Insurance and it cost me $8000.00. Progressive only gives you $1000.00 to cover "safety equipment' .. such as: Helmets, Jackets, Chaps, etc. My loss wasn't a stolen HD it was an accident but the bike was totaled .. and I got MSRP + tax back .. less my deductible of course!! Just a word to the wise .. take a look at your policies or contact your insurance agent and ask.
