Default WTF does this mean???

I just read this in the forum editorials and don't know what it means. Have I missed some magic feature of Road King. Here's the quote;
"and an active intake and exhaust noise control system that reduces the noise level of the bike when it thinks it's in an urban environment. In addition, this system will decrease the noise level of the exhaust if it's taking part in an emissions test, so it might come in handy."

Sounds weird.

I wondered about that too. Perhaps it's like the exhaust flapper the sports bikes like the
Honda CBR and Yamaha are using ??

Its what they have been using in Europe for years and on the Buells for a couple. It is a system that basically gets around EPA tests. The EPA only tests exhaust noise and emissions at certain levels but never wide open. So when your cruising the exhaust is quiet then you crack the throttle and a flap opens thereby diverting the exhaust through a different series of turns, baffles, etc. in the muffler to be more free flowing and consequently louder. Kinda like those cutouts that you can take off to run open headers on a drag car.

Try these links. they explain how they work and what theyre purpose is. Harley calls it the "active intake and exhaust noise control system". btw i could not find a schematic of the harley version so here is victorys version

Wasn't this system only installed on European and Japanese models?

Yes, it is only installed on some international versions-depending on where shipped for retail sale.

For us guys here in the USA, it's missing (so far).

The world has some strange and greatly differing noise/pollution laws. Some cities in Europe outlaw headlights at night to reduce 'light pollution'. They instead use lots of streetlights so vehicles with day time running lights must be altered to allow switching lights off.

Now that's a typically goofy European idea.
