I finally found what I have been looking for, but I really do not know a thing about it, except love at first sight. I have been riding metric and doing Iron Butt stuff for the last fifteen years, and at age 65, I am ready to sit around the campfire, listen to the youngsters tell their storys and not worry about doing 1000 mile days anymore.
I purchased a 2005 FLHTPI Police Electra Glide with 16,000 miles on it, and will pick it up Saturday. I am interested in any information anyone can give me on this particular model. I will have all the fluids changed immediately. It has new front brakes and a new clutch. What else should I be looking at other than the obvious tires, battery, etc. How has this model held up? Any idiosyncrasies that I should look for with this motor, (tensioners?) I have not owned a Harley since my first bike (1952 165 Hummer). I started with one and will end with one. Glad to be back in the family. By the way, I live in the Florida Keys so cold weather tips are not necessary.
I find it curious that the bike needed new brakes and clutch at 16k miles. Other than that, there is a sproradic history of cam chain tensioner problems. On the other hand, I put 60k on my 2005 FLHTCI (with 95" big bore kit & 203 cams) and had no problems. I had traded in the 2005 for a 2007 Ultra. Out of the two, I really liked the 2005 better.
Glad ya finally got it right. ..................Everybody is gonna tell to watch the cam chain tensioners, so I will too. You'll learn all ya need to know as ya go, so just ride safe and have fun!
2005 had what we refer to as "valve-itis" which means 05's had a valve seal issue where it caused some oil issues. Find out if the valves had any work done on them. If not, you might want to get them checked/changed if necessary. As for the tensioners, you can keep an eye them as they are prone to failure. They usually get checked beginning at 20-25k, or you can just change them out now to the newer hydraulic tensioner and upgraded pump setup.
Had to do the cam chain tensioners at 22400 on my 04. I did the upgrade and shouldn't have to worry about it for a while. Don't know if you're riding one or two up. If you want to run a tour pak you'll need to change the tops of the saddle bags or they won't open. Have a blast. Hope to make it over to the Keyes with the bike one of these days. Love that place.
I'm not curious about the brakes, it was a cop bike! These guys are in and out of traffic all day long. That's got to take its toll on those brakes I would presume!

Have fun

And the clutch too.
Went to a cop exibit the other day, one of the manuvers they where doing was seeing how long it would take to go through this little course, some of those guys could keep it upright for seconds no foot down, not moving, but they slipped the clutch a bunch so they could use the gyro effect.
