After finding my Kawi a quart and some more low, I decided I had better check the "pig" ( my affectionate name for my 2003 FLHTPI) and found the dipstick was AWOL.
It may be in the engine somewhere.... I don't know.
It might have broken off when I was installing the chrome oil line but I have no idea.
If that is the case, the dipstick has been in the engine somewhere for about 600 miles
so 40 dollars later I have a nice new chrome dip stick, but do any of you engine guys have an opinion as to what danger, if any is awaiting me by not trying to find and remove the dipstick if it is in cases somewhere. I am thinking if there was any danger it would have happened by now.
I am assuming there is a 5 inch long piece of plastic in there somewhere. I am also assuming the pump pickup has some sort of a screen to keep it from getting ground up in the pump gears.
I'm not afraid to answer it. My best guess is it's floating in the oil tank under the transmission. I don't think it will make it to the cases. As long as it doesn't float across the oil intake you're probably ok. I was hoping to take a look at my service manual to give you a better answer, but I won't be home to look at my manual before Wed. night. You can probably buy a gasket, drain the oil and transmission fluid, drop the pan and pull it out. Got a fluid change coming up soon?
