Added an HID lamp to my SG last night. Took a lot longer than I thought. The install was really easy, but I was determined I was going to snake the wires thru the main harness that goes on the right side of the frame under the tank. I loosend up the tank and disconnected the fuel line which helped a little, but if I could have removed the tank completely it would have been a big help. I didn't have any of the small compression clamps to hold the lines that connect the right/left side of the tank together so I couldn't do that.
I mounted the ballast on top of the radio w/double sided 3M tape on the bottom and the bracket had I screwed into the fairing using one of the screws that holds the guage in place already. It went really well and besides spending over an hour trying to snake the wire the install only took about 90 minutes. Had to route a + and - cable to the battery.
I am going to redo a little bit of it cause the wires were very long, so I just wrapped and wire tired them. You can't see it but it bugs me. I want to have them exact length cause I'm **** like that.
So, how's it light? Well, it was midnight when I finished so I didn't go for a ride and wake the neighbors, but I turned it on, and MAN is it bright! I will ride it tonight and adjust the light beam. I also didn't lose my high beam like many HID kits, this is a dual bulb setup on one H4 assembly. I'll post some pics when I redo it.
Would like to kmow your take. I put the HID on my Ultra and think the light sucks! It's a flat wide beam that if you adjust to get light on the road 100 feet ahead the high beam is rendered worthless unless you're looking for aircraft. No way would I ride with only the HID. I need the passing lamps ( 55w PIAA Ion Crystal) to light up the road.
I think my Dual Beam was better.
I hear other say theirs is great. Maybe there is something wrong with mine????
Came up to Sanford, Maine today, dark as hell out here.. Like Deliverance at night. It was like I was riding in the daylight! Very impressed! My lamp is pointed slightly off-center to the left. I will have to adjust it tomorrow. Other than that, this was money well spent! Definitely glad I didn't spend 500 on the HD kit.
