I've been thinking about getting a king tour pak, but I have a question for those that have one. The lid lock is only on one latch, can't you just unlatch the rear latch and lift up the rear of the lid to see what's inside? Maybe I'm wrong but would hate to lose a jacket or two if this is possible.
Anyone put a second lock on the rear latch also? Let me know before I buy one.
I've also seen the new hinge kit for the tour Paks also that Harley should have put on them from to get go.
It's not really possible to lift the corner up with the lid locked BUT I don't think it would take much effort for a determined thief to force the lid open, breaking the lock in the process. Just like a thief can break into a car by smashing the window.
The Lid Locks are a deterrent not a guarantee .. The effort required to break the Latch should be enough to set off the alarm although have not tested it ..
Not that it matters but the "lid lock" is not on the latch. It's near the front latch, but has nothing to do with the latch.
I don't think you can lift up the rear enough to look in. They might be able to rip the lid off (thiefs can do lots of damage). But it would take more, than just a curious thief.
With the factory hinges you can unscrew the hinge pin with torx drivers and lift the lid from the rear. Yet another reason to get the new hinges.
Bottom line is, as stated above, locks only keep honest people honest. If you store your life savings in your Tour-pak remember that a rock will break it into small pieces.
I've been riding with a detachable tour pak for over 10 years, never been an issue. As a matter of fact, I've never known anyone that has had anything stolen from a tour pak or saddlebag, locked or unlocked.
The locks or latches won't stop a thief, they are really pretty flimsy. I have not had anyone steal anything from in or on in my motorsickle in 43 years of riding. Just lucky I guess..
Since they're fiberglass, a good claw hammer would make quick access inside if someone wanted in bad enough. If I had a detachable Pak, I would most certainly buy the locks so that someone couldn't just unlatch the whole Pak and walk off with it. My 2 cents.
Yep, only keep honest people out. Several months ago there was a post here where someone had a bear rip open the tour pack. The thing was demolished. I think he left some food in there or something. It was kinda funny and had some pics.
