Default Making it my own

Hey all,

I've put 1500 miles on my 02 FLRH, and I love it. It's a great bike! being my first big-twin, Since I've had it, now I know what I really want.

I should have bought a street glide. I know I won't be buying a new bike or trading it in, so I guess the plan is to build a SG out of my RK, one piece at a time!

- I will be changing out the front fender to either a fatboy fender with inserts to make it fit, or a SG fender, depending on what look I like better. I haven't decided yet. I do like how the Fatboy fender shows off more of the wheel.

- I'll be removing the grab bar, and doing some sort of cover, I've even been contemplating a really interesting design for a quick release cover that I can remove to put on a sissy bar.

- The last phase will include the fairing, and I'll either go the whole way and get parts for the SG fairing, or do a memphis shades fairing.

I have a series of questions about what I can, and can't do with what I have now (or at least what I can and can't do within reasonable fund investment).

I really love these forums because I get so much help on the questions that I have. I have searched for much of these, but unfortunately, the searches have come up less fruitful than I'd like. So here goes:

1. Rear Fender-Saddlebag filler pannel/Fender extension - will this work with the RK rear fender, or do I have to replace the RK rear fender with an SG rear fender?

2. 2010 Road Glide or Street Glide Rims - I know that they use a 180 rear tire, and a 1" axle, but would they fit? I've heard you can do a 160 out back, would it be an option to do an Elite 3 160 on the 2010 RG/SG rim? What would be required if I wanted to make an attempt at fitting the 180 back there?

3. 2009/2010 Exhaust - would the main pipes fit? I have V&H Slip ons, and I like the cross over and the routing for the 2009/10 pipes. I know they changed the frame, but I'm curious how much they changed it.

I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm just learning motorcycles. I've done everything from Engine/Transmission rebuilds to oil changes on cars. I have limited tools where I live, but I'm slowly building up my supply again.

Any suggestions/recommendation/info would be great, and much appreciated!!!

Any one have any input here?

Another option on the wheels is that I could do a 2010 RG/SG front wheel and a 2009 or earlier SG wheel in back to comply with the 160 or smaller rear tire.

If you want to do the wheels i would do an 07 16" SG in the rear and the 18'' in the front,

but presonaly if i had your bike all i would do is lower it put a 21'' fat spoke wire wheel on the front with a white wall and some tall fat Apes!

on another note if your goign to spend the time and money moding your to look like a SG you might as well bite the bullet and trade it in... even if you want to wait a year to save up soem money your bike look bad *** as it is with the spokes, white walls, and being black. i made this mistake when i bought my 09 fatbob had it for 2 months and drove it for 2600 miles and just wasnt satified, then traded it for my 07 EGS

If you really want a Street Glide then buy a Street Glide, it is the cheapest way to get there. (especially if you consider resale/trade in value).
Exhaust and wheels you can probably find take offs.
I believe the new exhaust will fit some older bikes (the '09 touring exhaust will fit an '08 touring bike), not sure if it will fit an 02.
If you really want to change your wheels I'd look for used custom wheels (that fit your bike) rather than any of the newer factory wheels (even the chromed ones).

Don't get me wrong, I love my bike the way it is too, but I know my wife wont go for the new bike thing, I just got one, and you know, I'm fine with modifying it, I enjoy it.

The Fairing part will really be the last thing I do, I have a detach windshield now that works. The other parts are what I want to do, the rims, non-white-wall tires (sorry those of you who like them, I hate them) the fender skirt/filler and an upper fender-saddlebag filler, whilst removing the ugly grab-bar. Etc

I do a decent job at fabrication, but in order to do a lot, I'd need a lot of equipment/tools that i just don't have since I've moved to AZ.

1 question though..

If I were to get ahold of a 2010 RG/SG front rim and a 2007 or earlier SG rear wheel, I would only need new bearings designed for the smaller axle and I could bolt right on right?

I agree with you, it does look good! To each their own though.. I'm not a fan of dressers, so I want to go a bit more custom looking. But I love my bike, its so much better than the Sportster.

I would agree with you on buying a SG, and someday in a few years, I will, but until then, I'll modify my current bike!

The setup on an 02 and an 08 are the same in terms of actual distances, and mounting, the primary difference is that one is injected, so they'll have bungs for O2 sensors, which can be plugged. I guess I can just look for an 09 exhaust on craigslist and try it out!

In terms of the wheels, I really really like the new SG/RG front rims, they're just the style I want, and Once they're a bit more common, they should be a lot cheaper than custom rims.
