What do you consider and long ride
I rode to Hollister California from San Diego on a Sunday, had a new Corbin seat installed on my then new 03 Ultra on Monday morning and rode back to San Diego Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning I rode back up to Riverside and left for Wasington DC, the Wall. Did around 8000 miles in 3 weeks, with one day hitting 920 miles (I was tying to hit a 1000 mile day, but it got to late, if I only I hadn't stopped for that last beer). Still chasing a 1000 mile day!
I'll glide to Yuma for breakfast or to Palm Springs for lunch (Winter months of course) quite often. In June (06), one week-end I rode to Stateline, the next week-end I rode up Hollister (camping) and the third week-en I rode up to Vallaio/Fairchild area to visit some frinds. Three 1000 mile week-ends in a row. I think a good ride is at least a couple of hundred miles in each direction without stressing it. I guess that is why I am about to hit 55,000 miles on my bike.

when the israeli army kicked the crap out of Eygpt in the 6 day war, one of the ways they won was they researched how much water the troops would need per hour in the heat, and once they figured this out, they made sure the soldiers had a liter per hour (might have been 1.5 liters, i forget.) the eygptians, by contrast, only issued their soldiers a liter PER DAY, and they just couldn't fight as well.
this summer, stick to the liter per hour formula if it's 85+, and you'll feel a lot better when you get home, even if you have a crappy Moco Seat
Two months ago on May 6th, I rode in a Funraiser ride for "Ride for the Heart". My ride is a 06 Roadking Classic and at the time of the ride it only had 2000 miles on her. It was an Ironbutt ride covering 3 states (California, Nevada and Arizona) with 4 check points and a corner stop in Pahrump, Nevada for a total of 1108 miles to be completed within 24 hours to qualify for the Ironbutt "Saddlesore 1000". First long distance ride ever. I completed the ride in 18 hours. It was so much fun, I will be doing it again next year.

long distance riding is the same as training for anything else you have to build up to it

My best day was Mexico to Canada, a little over 1600 miles in less than 24 hours.
My best multi-day ride was just last May where I competed in the RAT Rally, (Ride around Texas) where you rode the outline of the state of Texas.
I rode about a 1,000 miles in a day (Sunday) to compete in the RAT. Rested a day (Monday) started the RAT Rally (Tuesday), ran the RAT, (a little more than 3,100 miles) which I did in 79 ½ hours, rested a day and rode the 1,000 miles back home.
Man, was that FUN!
