Default HID Passing Lamps

Anyone changed out the halogen 894 bulbs in your passing lamps for the HID kits that are available. And if you did, where did you mount the ballasts?

IMO...DON'T do it! I changed mine and the heat clouded my lenses. The ballast were hidden in my faring. If you don't connect the units DIRECTLY to the battery, you will burn out the ballast. They also won't work on the headlamp. Same problem.

Good luck! I just bought a HID bulb...doesn't use the ballast. I will let you know if they are any good.

Umm.....I dont know how you would directly connect the ballast to the battery but ok. Who makes a hid kit without a ballast??? Link please.

I have run hid on my road glide for over a year with no issues. Get a good kit and you will be ok.

There is no such thing as an HID without a ballast IMHO. The way these things work is by converting battery DC 14volts to 80+volts AC, then supplying that to the bulb. The bulb doesn't have a conventional wire element but a pair of electrodes between which a spark is struck, which provides the intense light. I have an early Harley HID kit on my bike and you can hear it hum when turning it with the engine off - that's the AC at work!

I connected my ballast to the battery using a relay, switched on by the bike's wiring.

Well that makes sense about the heat clouding up the lense on the passing lamps I have to do clean them every so often now. But do you really need the relay for the headlight install. I did a search for the HID headlight on the forum and there was one company that came up more often than not and it seemed they felt a relay was not needed. I want to do a HID install on the RK and have checked Ebay but found that HIDExtra seemed to have the best deal and product. Now I'm wondering do I need the relay?

I don't think you would but if you do use a good quality relay like bosch.
You could also try using LED fog light bulbs. Low drain on the charging & battery system.

I've tried the LED ones similar to what your listing only difference in the ones I've used is they are for H-3 lamp enclosures but have the same amount of SMD LED emitters.

IMHO, they are for show only. They do NOT put out enough luminance at this stage of LED technology. Maybe in a few more years but not this here today. They are pretty bright to stand about 12 feet in front of the bike and look at, but when your out at night they hardly put out light at all.
They are low drain on amps and that is about it.

Waste of money IMO.

But, since you have brought them up, have you purchased them and tried them?

If so what are your impressions of them at night?

I'm also looking into going with a true HID (with ballast) in the stock passing lamp outer lamp enclosure, maybe the lenses and reflector assy too.

Or just changing out to a completely different lamp assy with HID all in one.

As for using the relay, its a better idea to do so since it affords your ability to switch the two HID lamps on with out surging the stock wiring. The only thing that the stock wiring should do with relays installed is actually energize the relay coil, and then the direct line for powering the HIDs (fused as well) going back straight to the battery gives you better, stable current and will allow for longer ballast life as well. Your choice.
