Lucky for me, I had the bike in for an unrelated issue. The service writer felt them when he pushed the bike into the shop. I had no idea. He said he could feel them just pushing the bike. Sure enough, after they took it apart, he said that it had been spitting bearings out. Perfect timing, they changed them under warranty that was going to expire in two weeks.

They were touted as "100,000" mile wheel bearings when they were first put on harleys in 2000. They were about 30 years behind the times as Jap bikes had been using same type bearings for years. I knew from experience with those they wouldn't last 100,000 miles. I noticed the last time i had my Dyna front wheel off at 40,000 the bearing was starting to seep grease. Once that happens they have not many more thousands left. I figure to order bearings and change them this winter. 50,000 is a good time to change them.
My 05 front is failing at 63,000. Am going to have front and back replaced next month. Can't ride now, down with stomach problems and besides it raining..
Sealed wheel bearings have a small amount of grease in them and need air space for cooling and keeping them lubricated. As stated earlier supposed to be good for around 100k I change mine 40 to 50k if i have no problem. jmo
I had mine changed out at 40K, I bought the bearings thinking I could do it myself, but as I found out I didn't have the correct tools, the dealer charged me one hour per tire.
