FHP: Woman's car strikes, kills injured man in roadway

By RON HURTIBISE
Staff Writer
Charges are pending against an Apopka woman who, despite warnings from bystanders to avoid an injured motorcyclist lying in State Road 415, failed to take evasive action before running over and killing the man, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Saturday.

Kevin Hill, 47, of Sanford was conscious and able to sit up in the northbound lane of S.R. 415 near Reed Ellis Road at 1 a.m. Saturday, injured just moments earlier when his motorcycle was struck head-on by a vehicle that was passing another vehicle, FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.

The vehicle that hit Hill and the one that was passed both stopped, and several people were trying to help Hill, Montes said. As Susan Norman, 40, approached in the northbound lane, witnesses tried to flag her down and warn her to avoid Hill, but shedid not, Montes said.

After her car struck and killed Hill, Norman continued driving for about three miles before a Volusia County sheriff's deputy in the area saw her car and heard a noise that sounded like leaking fluid. He pulled Norman over and detained her, thinking her car might have been involved in one of the two wrecks, Montes said.

The woman told the deputy she thought she might have hit someone, Montes said.

Criminal charges are pending against Norman, whose car was impounded and will be reviewed for possible evidence.

Norman was not arrested, but troopers took a blood sample from her and a test will determine whether she was impaired at the time of the crash

"There was probable cause for impairment," Montes said.

Generally, it's best for witnesses not to try to move an injured person as they wait for emergency medical assistance, she said.

"But if a person is in immediate danger, motorists may want to move that person away," she said. A Good Samaritan law protects people from liability when rendering aid in such an emergency, Montes said

Insane!
I'm gonna be an armchair QB here for a minute...but wouldn't common knowledge tell someone to protect this guy by putting him in front of one of the parked vehicles?
I'm just thinking out loud, and no...I'm not placing blame on the 2 that stopped.
In either case, this is just terrible.

Survive a motorcycle crash only to be killed by a drunk driver passing by the scene.
Unbelievable!

Unbelievable! PLUS ONE !!

I guess I was wrong, I knew that NY drivers weren't MC friendly but I thought that Florida drivers were more aware of MC;s but I guess if she was DWI it really doesn't matter.

Be Safe out there JIM

And the woman tells the cop that she thinks "she might have hit someone", but never stopped! What a POS.

Probably talking on her cell or texting and not paying attention to what lay ahead in the road.
