I resently put together a fairing for my bike and just use a $5.00 marine antenna which is a antenna jack and a long wire. I anchored it across the inside front of my fairing and it picks up everything my truck does including the AM talk shows.
I have made a mount for my mp3 player and tied it into my stereo so I don't listen to the radio very often.
When I received the Biketronics kit the cheesy little wire inside sucked. Save time get the whip kit for what its worth I get stations I never knew existed.
I got one off ebay that is like a sticker with the antenna embedded into it. Cost was like 25.00 with shipping and works great. PIcks up everything the old antenna did where I listen to the actual radio.
only one of you has used the j&m.i was hoping that it would work good enough to buy.have to wait and see.dealer has some goat brand that says it will work great has had no complaints as of yet.plus he said if i didn't like it he would take it back and reinstall my whip.maybe i should just do it.

I also have this one and it works really well. Some folks have complained about it and I'm not sure why. Before I installed mine, I counted all the stations I could find with the stock antenna. I did the same check with this Ebay antenna and counted the same number of stations.
I've got a Dakota Digital and have no complaints. I'm not that far outta Chicago so that be something to consider about its range. I also get the weather band, though it stated I wouldn't.
+1 for the e-bay antenna, $21.95 + free shipping. I was pretty skeptical, but I got one in good time, put in my Road King fairing and it works great. It works so good that if it had a factory emblem on it people would be paying $89.95 for it. Look at E-bay for the antenna, the seller goes by streetglidecota.
Great customer service and a good quality product for the price.
No power is needed. It plugs into the back of the radio and has about 3 feet of flat wire attached to a tape. Plug in the new antenna and peel off the backing and tape it to the fairing.
I live in NYC so I still get all my stations including WB. When I am on a long ride to PA or NJ reception does fade but think that would happen with the whip anyway.
A simple $5 marine dipole wire antenna like the Boss, SeaWorthy, etc. works very well, though nothing is as good as a full-sized 29˝" whip. The key to the wire antennas is to get as much of the unshielded portion of the antenna vertical, otherwise it'll be too directional to rely on. It's always tempting to throw something across the the fairing horizontally because you can fit a longer one in, but it just isn't going to be as good in all directions. I've found the amplified ones to be a waste of $$$. If you have a weak, crappy signal an amplified antenna usually gets you a strong, crappy signal
