is that all there is to it? or are there other things that need be purchased?
like will i need to get a hiflow ac, or diff pipes or can the pc or sert be a solo thing and still add preformance. im new to this fuel injected crap, help me out please.
no u dont have to put on pipes or air intake u will get some benifit from just tuning alone mainly in heat reduction but for a few dollars more add the airintake and get even more performance then alot of dollars more pipes and even more performance.your motor is basiclly a big air pump the more air that can get in and out the more power it will make,on the 07 up the airintake is the main restriction point. as for a tuner epa makes harley tune them lean that equalls heat and more air (with airintake and pipes ) and they get really hot, will also get preignition knock.
OK...you could do a search but ya know we can help ya right here. So...Like bigdumbnoitall00 said, your engine is nothing but a big air pump...and with EPA standards our bikes run a wee bit lean which does nothing for our performance.
So, with that being said there are a number of tuners for us. You have Thundermax, SERT, and Power Commander V. Probably a few more out there I'm just too tired to remember. These devices basically get your bike running abit more efficiently with different settings that are manipulated by the black boxes. Although, someone correct me if I'm wrong...SERT...is a direct download to the ECM.
Now...Adding a Free Flowing Air cleaner alone wouldn't do you justice. You'd be pulling more air and not allowing for decent scavenging by the Stock Exhaust. Even just adding an exhaust alone would upset the balance. Even just adding a Free Flowing Air cleaner and exhaust still wouldn't be optimum...why you might ask?? Because while the ECM will control your bike well enough to 50% Throttle, it will not after 50% unless you have additional help from one of those fine boxes mention above. So...the ideal set up would be to save the pennies for the total system. Free Flowing Ar Cleaner, Good Free FLowing Exhaust and a Good device that will give you the performance you're looking for.
I added an Arlen Ness Big Sucker, Monster Ovals and a Power Commander V and added a good 10 horses to My bike easy. I verified through dyno.
Everyone has different experiences with each different set-up. No one set-up is typical. Two bikes can have the same set-up and not get exactly identical HP and Torque curves. But ya know...our bikes are like us...no two are exactly alike.
I Bought My Power Commander V from Fuel moto because unlike having to do a search like some in this forum suggest straight off the cuff...Jamie from Fuel Moto will Chime in and give you good advice whenever you ask it. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't search for more advice on this, as a matter of fact there are probably a million threads on this forum about it. But ya know...I'll answer ya...Cause I've been where you are and will always extend the same courtesies that were extended to me when I first came to this forum.
Some sites like Fuel Moto have complete set-ups you can buy. Or you can mix and match to your hearts content. The thing I like with Fuel Moto...tell them what you're running in an air cleaner, Exhaust, engine size and the way you're gonna ride your scoot...they'll have a MAP already in the PC V when it's sent to you. Have an issue with the MAP not working right...they'll help ya tweak it!
Now...by no means am I saying to look into Fuel Moto alone...Please read up in this forum about what others have done and achieved. You might find a set-up that works better for you, your bike and your wallet. Just know we're here to help ya when you need help!
great help from another nc rider! thanks. like ya said, search would only turn up who knows how many threads... which is one reason i dont do searches for stuff on forums... way too many threads to wander through...the little black box from whomever would be the place to start, to 'clean up' the factory setting...then move on from there with the pipes then the ac, or ac then pipes... this **** was simple with my honda!

PC-V is a good start. Check out the sponsor at the top of the page. I recommend them highly. Bang for the buck there's none better.
Oh yeah, Jamie will make it as simple as your Honda and will have go fast goodies for IT as well.
thanks... ive been lookin breifly at all the diff black boxes...just trying to get my xmas list going! guess the pc-v is lookin #1 due to the responses ive seen from fuel moto, seems like a right guy to deal with ...

Yep, thats what I'm doing. Have read a lot of good feedback from Fuelmoto customers.
The SERT is a complete rip off, its basically just a junction box that connects your PC to your ECM. It would cost around $15 to make. The PCV actually intercepts the ECM signals and adjusts them, a lot more went into designing and testing the PCV than went into the SERT.
BUT the SERT the only system that gives you full control over the factory ECM. you can adjust everything from basic fuel and igntion to knock retard, e throttle response, accelerator enrichment, decellerator enleanment etc etc. If the stock computer controls it then you can adjust it.
Ultimately the support you get from the supplier is as important as the hardware, I have rarely heard a complaint about fuelmoto.
To be real if you are just doing pipes and a cleaner then any tuner will do the job. If you are gonna go wild big cubes or custom etc then the SERT is probably the way to go, IMHO.
