I understand your frustration! I had the same issue when installing my Trim Ring. Here is a thread that may help you out;

Some of us have eliminated the stock Trim Ring altogether. Others have made it work with the original trim ring in place.
If you search, you will find an excellent picture from a member of the lamp bracket that was modified by bending parts of it. I not only did that but also wrapped the lamp bracket with 1/4" insulation after removing the stock trim ring.
You will know what I am talking about once you start searching!
