Default 11 tire balance weights

This seems a little much to me. I have 11 weights on the front rim. They are only 8” from the valve stem so its not the problem. Is there an acceptable number to have? I have just over 1k on it now and replacing the tire or rim won’t get rid of all weights anyway. Each weight is 5gm or .18 oz x 11 weights = 1.98oz or 55gm. Is this too much for beads to overcome? Think I will go down to the dealer tomorrow and look at the other bikes with the same rims to see what they have for weights.

I have pics at this link.

did you mount the lightest side of the tire at the valve? lightest side of tire marked with a small circle most of the time...seems like a lot of weights

It came that way from the dealer. Guess I could add a second valve stem opposite of each other. You would never see both at the same time.

Rim or tire has to be bad. I would not accept it. There is a (dot) on the tire. That dot should be even with the valve stim hole on the rim. Dont let them tell you different. That is 3 times to much weight. Try balancing the rim without a tire. The valve stem hole is the lightest point on the rim. the dot is the heavest point on the tire. I usuall don't have to put any weights on my bikes (none) I run ARGON in all my tires auto bikes and truck. That is what they put in luxury auto's now from the factory. I have a BMW R1100RS bike A Harley 2003 Heritage Springer a Jaguar auto and a Silverado truck. I don't have that many weights on all of them total.

My guess is bad tire. I thought the valve stem was supposed to be the heaviest part of the rim? Doesn't matter really because I would check the balance of the rim for the heavy spot with out the tire mounted just to be sure.

I'm with the bad tyre school on this one. I have a bare 04 wheel right here and I can see what look like balancing holes machined on the inside, out of sight when a tyre is fitted. So I reckon the wheels are indeed balanced when manufactured. Any out of balance caused by the tyre and valve should be much less than your arsenal of weights.

That's an absurd NUMBER of weights, but not excessive amount of weight to balance a wheel. Most tire manufacturers will consider a tire defective if it requires more than 3 oz to balance. You have less than 2 oz. on there. I just don't understand why they used 11 5gm weights. The same could have been accomplished with 4 quarter-ounce weights placed on each side of the rim (so you'd only see four at a time).
