Besides the heat, some times the parts are sand/bead blasted as a prep.

Paint and powder have one very important thing in common. The prep work BEFORE is the most important part of the process.

Considering that your front crashbar is going to be taking rocks and bugs, powder coating is the way to go. Make sure the powder coater masks off any area contining screws or theads. PC is thick and will cause issues with assembly if the threads get coated. Zook.

I've used painted and powder parts on my bike................If painting chrome pieces, make sure an etcher is used to eat at the chrome prior to painting. I use powder in areas that are prone to rock chips and paint in the other areas. One other thing to consider is the heat with powder coating, plastic chrome parts will have to be painted (Inserts and such), paint will hold up fine unless its in an area where wrenching is involved. Paint actually gives a better finished product, but like everyone else said, powder will be much more durable.
Man thats a sweet looking wheels on that bike!!!!

depending on who paints your parts, the end result is a 2 stage paint will give a better gloss and depth than powder coat but the cost factor is more. Like liltrk said, the prep part is most important. either way you choose to go, the chrome has to be completely removed in order for the paint or powder coat to adhere to. Dupont makes a very tough clear coat and excellent metal etching primer that would suite your needs.
If you paint them, you can wet sand and buff out any imperfections in the clear coat to a brilliant shine where as with powder coat you cant and usually have a textured finish, especially with black

I just finished with some powder coating and would highly recommend it. I would also ask your powder coater to apply a clearcoat as well, even more chipping protection.

I'd take it back to the powder coater. I had a friend that had his wheels powder coated. Front one turned out fine, back one did not. He asked the powder coater if this was normal and was told that it would be redone. Turned out perfect the second time.

ORIGINAL: LittleSkull

I just got all my chrome parts (including mufflers) powder coated black. Like Topper said "Paint actually gives a better finished product, but like everyone else said, powder will be much more durable." I noticed that some of the parts don't have a very "smooth" looking effect, but rather an "orange peal (thats what they call it in Italy)" effect such as on the paint of certain cars. Is this normal or did they just do a crap job on mine? Yesteday i was trying to pass between a parked car and one stopped in traffic and i brushed the left motor gaurd against the parked car's bumper and unfortunately some of the paint rubbed of (i was hoping that powder coat would resiste to anything
Thanks, Cris
