Default compensator sprocket?

I am getting a clunking sound coming from the left side of my 2010 RGC. I hear it when letting the clutch out and sometimes when pulling it in. I can also hear it at cruising speed when letting off the throttle then giving it throttle. If feels like bad u joints in a car. I took it to the dealer today and the mechanic said he thought it was the compensator sprocket. Of course they can't look at it until next week. Anybody have any ideas?

Easy fix. Typicaly when I can not realy tell where the noise is coming from, then it is the compensator. LOL Pull your cover and see if it is loose. Only special tool you need is something to hold the chain when you tighten it. Good luck

Default Not Compensator !

It's not the compensator , it's the chain tensioner ! It's hanging up not retracking , and thats causing the chain to get loose ! This has happened to me on my 2010 streetglide , I took it back to dealer @ 27 miles and they found the tensioner hanging up because of a burr . I saw it ! They took me to the back to explain it too me .They deburred it and no more problems . Sometimes these thing happen , this about the third one I have heard of . Good luck !

My 09 SG sounded like it had a bunch of marbles on the left side. It was the chain tensioner. The dealer changed it on warranty and the noise went away.

Yep, most likely the tensioner. The new style "automatic" tensioner really does not work all tat well in some cases. Either it tightens the chain like a banjo string or it hangs up and will not anjust the slack out. Mine was one that hung up.

I'm going to let the dealer look at it as much as I hate to. They always screw something up but I'll let the warranty deal with it. I had buyers remorse when I bought my '07 Ultra Classic because I liked my '01 UC better. So that I don't have buyers remorse with this one let's keep it on the light side.
Let's take a vote.
How many people think it's the tensioner?
How many people think it's the compensator?
So far it's 3 to 1. Rest assured I'll vote for which ever one it turns out to be.

Default who knows?

The verdict is still out on this clunking sound. My local dealer still can't get to it or even look at it until next week. I took it to another dealer 35 miles away, the service guy rode it, could hear it, and said it's normal that they all are doing it and it is the compensator sprocket. I took the primary cover off when I got home and checked the torque on the compensator sprocket, it's ok, the chain tensioner seems to be working ok, chain was not loose and tensioner seemed to be releasing ok. The oil which I had just changed with mobil 1 20w50 250 miles ago looked like it had sparkly glitter in it and the color had changed from gold to dirty looking. I've read the SE compensator is alot better. I shouldn't have to drop $250. just to make it go away. After I put new oil in it it seems to be better. I'm going to ride it until it quits. And, I'm not going back to my local dealer for any service or maintenance. It's BS that I buy a bike that is not a month old with only a little over 1,000 miles on it and they can't look at it for a week. I bought my 1st Harley 46 years ago. It's starting to amaze me with all the negative comments I am hearing and the negatives about dealers that I am still buying them. You better believe if I ever buy a new bike again, probably won't at my age, I'll be looking at a Kawasaki or Yamaha. Check out my old kawasaki in my photo album.

After 46 years of Harleys it's hardly the first problem. There's not enough space to tell about them all.

Default Compensator?

Hey Sancho: I can relate to your feeling pretty well and I too have been looking at the new Kawasaki Voyager. I'm getting fed up with the "that's normal" dealer and MOCO crap. First on my 09 Ultra it was a leaking primary seal (3000mi), then a cupping front tire (7000mi) and now it's bad compensator(15000mi). The dealer, and I've been to several with this compensator, and Customer Service are all telling me that the sounds are normal. It actually sounds like the starter is ripping out. Ive bought my own SE Compensator and will replace it myself because I'm embarrassed for people to hear it. I'm really surprized that all these people let MOCO screw them around and keep buying their junk. I can't wait to see what's next. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my Ultra but damn, enough is enough.
