So I finally bite the bullet and take it in this morning. A mechanic listens to it and say's "that ain't right". Two hours later they call me and said I can pick it up. When I got there the service writer says they adjusted the clutch and the noise went away. (a differn't mech worked on it that listened to it). I told the write up guy I'll probably be back in 1/2 hour. Sure 'nuff. Problem was not solved. I rode it for about 6 miles and took it back to the dealer, got the service manager and asked him to listen to it. He said they would have to tear into it after saying it's something in there. I was not nice and won't bore you with what I told him. They wanted to charge me $35 for adjusting the clutch. Clutch didn't need adjusted and it didn't fix the problem. Service manager agreed with me that maybe it's the clutch plates are loose. No unusual noise when starting, none when riding, only when bike is in 1st gear and clultch is released or pulled in at a crawl. Somethings hitting something.
Sheesh, you guys are worse than my kids. Its the compensator. Most of 09s and 10s do it and the fix is to get the Screaming Eagle compensator if you want to get rid of the noise. Otherwise its just a noise that isn't hurting anything.
Beary
After 2 days in the shop the svc mgr tells me they checked compensator, clutch plates, tensionor and didn't find anything wrong. So if it's not in the primary it has to be in the transmission. The sound is like when you put your bike in first gear only not as loud. This isn't my emagination, I've had too many Harleys and none have done this and I haven't heard anybody else's do it either. So I'm taking it to another dealer Monday. But, I'm going to ask for a transmission tech and talk to him before I leave the bike. If I can't talk to the guy that's going to work on it then I ain't leaving it.
Sounds like possibly a retainer ring has slipped out of its grove on the main or countershaft of the tranny. That could be catastropic if a gear slides to far while you're riding.

Thanks for the input! I have been hoping someone that knows a little about trannys would reply. How catastropic is it? Gears locking up? Wheel locking up? Should I quit riding it?
