Default transmission clunking while rolling along

I just noticed it yesterday after getting off of the highway..Pulled the clutch in and sort of drifted to the stop sign engine noise down to idle and then I hear it...clunk clunk clunk till I stop. The problem seems to be internal...I pulled the sprocket cover off to make sure nothing was in there, and all was good there...It almost seems to me like something is not meshing inside..like a half of a tooth off or something...Can anyone give me ideas on what to look for next???I did put a new stator in it two months ago I dont think any thing in there is the problem because when i lift it off the ground and spin the rear wheel with the engine off it still makes the noise.....Any ideas guys/???thank you....

Check the front belt pulley nut, they do come loose and will chew the spline right out of your sprocket. I've seen it at least 3 times.

Due to compensator failure was not because of the compensator failed, it was the chain tensioner that failed. I have an 09 FLHT that just happen to have major issues. Not from riding it hard or being not so bike nice to a great machine. The chain tensioner (stock.original) was thinner in metal that allowed the chain to come loose when it cooled off and just beat the hell out of the compensator. Once it was identified, too late more damage. Play in the transmission main shaft should have been 0.0. Instead it was 0.4 and higher, further investigation it was found that the bearings on the shaft siezed and scored the shaft. In the mean time the metal flakes got into the other bearings and turned them to basically oatmeal. Well folks, I'm here to tell you since a new tranny (2010) style, new chain tensioner, clutch adjusted and compensator it now runs quieter than it ever did as far as tranny noise there is none! The dealership did me justice with out me having to ask, beg or be rude. I can 't complain when something this bad was found, corrected and back on the road in less than a week! That's fantastic. There was no beef regarding the oil being used in the tranny or the primary. Guess which one gets the BELRAY, what gets the AMSOIL? No problems with the miles. Ohy yeah, brand new, less than 2 miles on it, now has 34500. as sits right now, I'm hoping to close it out closer to the 40k before we have to park em for the winter. That's it. Be persistant, be nice and get them to ride it, and hear it.

Later

Tom
Thank God for Warranty!
