I've always thought that it needs to get at least over boiling temp to cook off the moisture.
It will evaporate at lower temps, just faster as the temp increases. Put water in three pans, one at ambient temp, one at 180°, and one at 212°. The water will evaporate fastest at the highest temp, but the 180° water will evaporate faster than ambient.
My 00 EGC runs right at 220 - 230, this summer in Texas (105 degrees) it did hit about 170ish in traffic, which I would consider fine for the conditions.
The rear cylinder will run cooler with the lowers removed, which will lower the oil temp. IMHO 230 dgs is not hot. Mine runs about that on long hard cruise in warm weather. I plan to send a sample to Blackstone at my next change. My Cessna Skywagon always got good numbers from Blackstone and I run it at or below 400 CHT and oil at or below 360 dgs F.
help me out.. price is almost the same.. should i go with a dash oil temp gauge or will the digital oil level/temp gauge do ? one is also easier than the other.... i did install a oil cooler, do i really need to monitor the oil temp ?
actually, you no more need the oil temp guage than a Tach - nice info to know???? If I were to install one (I have the dash) I would go with something I could monitor while riding..
I don't have a answer for you as to whats to hot but I can tell you this. This summer I crossed over Hoover Dam in the Heat of the day (105+) Riding two up not knowing there was a construction project going on. For about a mile and a half the traffic was stop and go mostly stopped. It took the better part of a hour to get through that mess.I about died in ambient temp plus the heat from the bike. About half way Thur I had my wife get off and walk. I was just completely exhausted trying control 800 plus pounds. needless to say I was hating this outing. Anyway I don't know what temp the bike reached but I don't believe you could encounter any worst conditions for a air cooled engine. The bike never missed a beat and runs fine to this day. so put you mind at rest what ever temp it runs at it can handle it, better than us.
