Default New Jersey Riders - boardwalk question

I am riding with the Veterans and the "Run for the Wall" ride - we will be leaving CA on May 19 and heading for DC to arrive on Memorial Day - after that we will enjoy the sites of DC for a day or so then head to Boston - My goal is to finish off my quest to ride in all 50 states... This will take me through NJ - I want to spend a day/night along your Boardwalk area.. My knowledge base for NJ is ZERO - I spent many a summer at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in the 50's and 60's

http://www.beachboardwalk.com/02_history.html

I would like to see your Beach Boardwalk..

I am not interested in casino's - More interested in History and a good example of an old fashion boardwalk

So, if you only had one day/night to visit an example - where would you go???

Thanks for your help..

#### I did google this but way to many choices - thats why I am asking YOU

Ocean City NJ is a family resort, but its dry (no bars/alcohol)

Wildwood is kinda trashy- LOTS of foreigners, teenagers and booze

Avalon, Stone Harbor and Sea Isle are all very nice but lack the 'boardwalk'

Sea Side Heights sucks

Atlantic City is a toilet

if i was going to recommend a nice beach town that is clean, family oriented with a boardwalk- it would be Ocean City.

The southern most boardwalk is in Wildwood. It's real big and will be very empty this time of year. It's still a great example of a NJ boardwalk with an amusement pier.

Atlantic City's boardwalk is also huge. Miles long. This might be the place to go since there is so much going on at the casinos and lots of places to stay. Lots of good restaurants too.

Farther north is Point Pleasant. Another nice boardwalk but beach towns tend to be pretty desolate this time of year.

One of my favorites used to be Asbury Park. This town pretty much disappeared and is currently being slowly rebuilt. Not much to do there now but a nice example of a boardwalk town.

Last is Seaside Heights. Big boardwalk with an amusement pier. Again, wintertime it's going to be dead.

If you want to tour the boardwalks of NJ these are all good examples with Wildwood and AC being the best. If you're looking for one great example Atlantic City is your only choice. Loads of indoor parking, casinos, and lots of great restaurants and plenty of places to stay. Good Luck.

I live in point pleasant, and while i love this town and it's beach life, I would by no means call it the best boardwalk in all of nj. I noticed that you intend on coming after memorial day this year. Great time to come. Memorial day itself is a nightmare around here. I would imgaine it's the same all up and down the nj coast. My area gets invaded by hundreds of thousands of people from the general tri-state area. Therefore you must be prepared to sit in traffic. and harleys don't like sitting in 90 degree shore traffic.
My one recommendation would be to research some of the shore towns that the others have mentioned and see if they have any festivals around the time you plan to be here. I know that my area has tremendously popular seafood festivals. Something like that would give you a great idea of what the area and its people are like. Depending on what floats your boat, the nj coast has plenty to offer everyone. wildood, ocean city, seaside park, point pleasant and asbury park. If it were me, I would ride from dc and take the Cape May Ferry from Delaware to Cape May, NJ. Hang out in Cape May for a few days (very scenic and great shopping/restaurants) then cruise up to wildwood and check out the boardwalk/scene up there, or maybe ride for an extra 45 minutes or so and get up to Atlantic City. That area of southern Nj isn't that congested. Once you get up in my neck of the woods, the highways and biways start to get a little obnoxious. Just my opinion.

thanks for all the great advice, I will print this out and take it all in... Our plan is to arrive in DC May 31, 2010 - after the Veterans ride - wife wants to park the bike and do the DC tourists stuff - She is a great sport and puts up with a lot on the road - so, we will be in DC for several days.... Putting us in the NJ area around the second week of June... Ya, I know it will be crowed with kids getting out of school and the starting of the Summer... Really No interest in the casino's (not against them but I have Reno/Vegas close to home here and go to a casino anytime.. We want to enjoy some local history and the realy NJ... Thanks again for all the advice.. If you every get to CA.. The Santa Cruz boardwalk has lots of great local history and the riding up or down Highway 1 is great..
