Default Garage door opener:

I just installed the HD garage door opener and noticed that the instructions called for the mechanics to use a special ? heating tool when putting the but splices together. Is that tool a solder? I did not have one but used the but connectors after soldering the connections then sealed them with silly cone.
Is that enough or did I miss something?

Heat shrink tubing and a heat gun most likely. If you've never done heat shrink before I highly recommend it. Silicone is not a particularly good approach.

Yup. Get a heat gun. $20 at most hardware stores.

you can use a regular propane torch or just your lighter to shrink the stuff.

Just don't get it too close. Heat shrink and wire insulations don't like open flame.

Soldering connections and heat shrinking splices is the best way to do it. Then there is no doubt about a good connection.
