Question Need tire size help please

I have a 2000 Ultra Classic and it's time for a new tire.
The bike has a MT90B-16 Dunlop D402 now maximum load is 827 Lbs at 40 psi.
I'am wondering if a MU85B-16 Dunlop D402 maximum load is 908 Lbs at 40 psi
will fit, last longer, what are the pro's and con's. Thanks for your help. Sorry this is for the rear of the bike. I will try to add a link to dunlop.

My buddy put the MU85B-16 on his 03' RK and it wore off the rubber flap protector on the belt guard, he was not happy. He is going back to the MT90.

I prefer Avon Venoms and currently have a 140/MU on my FLHS and will shortly fit a 150. The actual widths of these tyres vary from their nominal width, for example the stock MT is 133mm wide, a MU 143mm but a 150 only 150mm!

To get a MU in that rubber curtain needs modifying, which takes a few minutes. On my bike I have just 3/16" clearance between tyre and belt. Your friend should have checked his bike's clearances, or posted here on HDF as you have!

When I fit the 150 I will fit 2mm spacers behind the rear wheel pulley, which will push the belt across the gearbox pulley (there is plenty of room) and provide 1/8" clearance between new tyre and belt. 150 is the widest tyre that can be fitted to a 3" rim. I ordered the new tyre just an hour ago!

If he needs 80 more lbs carrying capacity, I suppose the mod is worth it. He won't get any better mileage. Just what is it with everyone trying to put bigger tires on, for what, looks? Most wider tires cost more and will not get better mileage, what's the point? The new bikes with the wider tires cost more money and for what, they won't get better mileage or corner better than my 08' stock size Elite III's.

Having said I prefer Avons, they actually recommended I use an MU because they reckon the MT is marginal when fully loaded, when my wife and I are on tour. Their 150 has the same load rating as their MU and has almost identical rolling diameter to the MT, but their MU is larger. So 'the point' and my reason is simply getting a tyre better suited to riding on long tours close to the vehicle weight limit for my bike.

Setting aside the custom appearance of wide tyres we humans are getting bigger and heavier, so to some degree the wider tyres and safe vehicle weight limits on recent Harleys are there to compensate.

Another vote for the Dunlop E3's. I used the MU90b-16. It should fit. Anyway, much better tires then the 402's. IMO

True! On earlier bikes like my 1990 with a wide belt there is not much room. I had to remove the rubber curtain on the belt guard to get an MU in, with just 3/16" clearance between tyre and belt. Later narrow belt bikes have more clearance. To get a 150 in I am fitting spacers behind the rear wheel pulley to give me 1/8" clearance!
