Default Cruise install turning into cluster.....

Took my bike in to HD of Atlanta at 9am today to have cruise and new iso grips installed....charging 3 hours labor (3 dealers quoted same) and running a special for 25% off labor charge. Decided to have them do my 15,000 mile service at the same time.

So, I go back at 2pm to pick it up, not ready yet. No big deal, go next door and eat (got dropped off so I cant leave) and came back at 3:30, still not done. The mechanic told me something about he cannot get the light to come on on the speedometer that allows him to do something or other (yea, I don't know what the hell he was talking about, that's why I'm not a mechanic)....so, now they're talking about maybe having to replace the throttle cable, or maybe some other parts. So he continues trying to 'diagnose' the problem and by 5:30pm the service manager tells me they can either put it back together without it working and i can ride it home then bring it back, or I can leave the bike there and they'll continue working on it tomorrow. I opted to get a ride home in a very nice Harley Davidson edition Ford pickup, not exactly what I had in mind!!!

In defense of the dealership, the service manager has assured me he will get it resolved and will make it right. He stated they will not be charging me additional for diagnosing the problem whatever it ends up being. He also stated they will deliver the bike to my house if it isn't convenient for me to get back up there to pick it up (I live in the middle of nowhere).

I never missed my wife when we were apart...guess that's why she's my ex-wife....sure don't like not having the bike in the garage though. I usually have a mechanic work on my bike out of his home so this is my first experience using a dealership. Hoping it'll still come out ok.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I'm sure this isn't their 1st cruise install, although it might be for the guy who is doing it. Sounds like they are at least trying to be decent about it. Hope all goes well!!

Sounds like the dealer is at least trying to keep you happy. Good luck. BTW I really like having cruise.

It will be worth the wait to get it right, and your baby will sleep just fine in a warm, cozy shop. One thing about the HD cruise, it works just like the one in your car, only better 'cause it's on your bike!

Sounds like they're fixin it right instead of half assed. It will be worth it when it's done

Thanks guys....yea I agree that they really do seem to be making it right...once all is done we'll see. Also, several of the employees said that the guy doing the work is their #1 tech for electrical issues so apparently that's why he's so puzzled.

Sorry to hear of the difficulties.

Suggestion: See if you can get a look at the box the cruise kit came in, get the part no., and confirm it's the correct kit for your bike. I suggest this because there are different kits for '02-'03 touring models, '04-06 touring models, etc.

Electrically, the cruise kit is plug n' play: (1) remove right side switches/harness and install the switches/harness supplied in the kit; (2) remove fairing cap and install the cruise on/off switch; and, (3) remove the left side cover and plug the bike's cruise control harness into the cruise control module included in the kit.

If the cruise light isn't changing from red to green, most likely culprits are a pinched wire in the right handlebar switch housing, or a bad throttle roll-off switch.

Note: The above information is from my '04 cruise installation; the '03 may be different.

Glad to hear good words about a dealer. Seems like we only hear about bad dealer experiences. They will make it right for you IMO.
