I'd rather buy a bike that doesn't have a bunch of extras, because I end up changing things and don't want to pay for others mistakes. 20.00 for a plain gas cap versus one with skulls. 90.00 for mirrors versus ones with live to ride saying on them...

What's wrong with chrome skulls...
For my personal preference I do not want death symbols on my bike.

All of the mods and accessories may make a difference if you sell to an individual but on a trade at a dealership, forget about getting anything extra.

I buy new .. fix 'er up the way I want to enjoy it for the next few years, then sell it for what ever the market will bear. I add the goodies for me .. not to keep up with the "Jones". Can I get my monies worth for the $$$ I've spent? Probably not but I sure enjoyed making it stand out in the crowd of stockers .. and the compliments don't hurt either. Just my 2 cents worth!!

What's the old saying? One mans trash is another mans treasure. Prime example is my 02 Ultra. I painted it flat black. Some love it, some hate it. Granted I've only got about 30 bucks invested, I know I'd have about 30 more in paint thinner to get it all off, and back to it's original color if I wanted to sell it. Some of the more common things such as chrome lower legs, switch housings, polished rotors, braided lines/cables, etc., can be a helpful selling point. Do you get the money back? Doubtful. Will it help your bike sell before the next guy that has a bone stock one? Maybe. Most of the bikes I sell get a few little odds n ins like mentioned above. That extra "curb appeal" has helped in my sales. Of course I've also had the ones that went through the H-D book and said "Oh I want one of everything". Hence all the "Live To Ride", and Skulls I have laying around my shop. If you want your bike to stand out, you can do it with out going to an extreme. Plain chrome, when placed right, can make a bike look like you spent more than you did. Of course all that being said, sometimes I just can't help but go to extremes.

In my quagmire of trouble these days, I contacted the dealer that I bought my current bike from and asked what my bike would be worth in trade. I explained that I had added no less than $6500.00 in accessories, and had also purchased a 6 year HD extended warranty. His answer.......

It should be worth $20,000.00!!!

Hell, I still owe that much on it!

We are talking an '06 Road Glide with 5700 miles!

So, in answer to the original question, enjoy the modifications that you do, build it your way, but dont expect to get much for your accessories at trade in time.....

Add-ons are just that, your style, what you like for add-ons. If you get lucky and find someone thats likes them Ok otherwise you just take a hit.

I think everyone has the same thought and are correct. Having owned many different brands and giving them all the needed extra piece, it didn't increase my return on investment. It simply added to the "curb appeal" (well put dhutchison) and made it more attractive to the buyer compared to bone stock.
