Default Another question about bike value

Hi, guys I have a 2009 ultra classic with 32,000 miles with a ss 106 big bore kit,Vance and Hine true dual exhaust , screaming eagle tuner, chrome forks, Harley 5 spoke chrome wheels and a lot other chrome I won't list. Nada says around 17,000 i'am just wondering if that is close to a realistic number. Would appreciate input on what you guys think. Thanks

That doesn't sound to bad, it just depends on the buyer. Are they Thunderstar wheels? Wheels and fork chrome make the biggest impression on me. The engine work will be more dependent on how hot a bike the buyer wants.

All the chrome in town won't add much value to the bike, especially if traded in. Best bet is to remove as much as possible and re-use or sell outright. Motor upgrades can hurt also. Some people are scared of the motor being messed with. I sold an electra glide about ten years ago that had a stroker motor built by a well known ( Short Block Charlie and Hippo ) builder, but everyone seemed scared by that. A lot of HD riders aren't in to built motors, etc.

As a general rule, all the add-ons do in terms of value is increase curb appeal, not dollars and cents value... The money you spent on those major extras is only going to add value if you find the right buyer who is looking for those particular things. Of course you will add money to the baseline everyday figure for your bike for those, and you'll hope you get that money, but be prepared to wait, maybe for quite some time, before you find a buyer willing to pay close to your price for the bike. Depending on where you are, there are a ton of used bikes out there...the wheels, engine mods, and everything else may have made you happy, but that was money that in terms of getting a return on it, may never happen. Another thing too is that it may detract from value and curb appeal...were it me looking at that bike, I would figure, regardless of what you, the seller, told me, that the reason you increased the performance of the bike was to USE the performance, and that the bike was significantly abused in its lifetime. Now, that may or may not be the case, but it's the prima facie assumption, therefore, I'd personally find that bike much less valuable than a stocker with the same mileage. Others may not agree, but I'd rather get a stock bike and make my own mods with a machine that I believed had been maintained regularly and correctly, and ridden gently.

17K sounds pretty optimistic particularly for an 'owner sale'. The bike has just about the mileage you'd expect for that year, so not high or low-mileage. But I think you'd do better to do as the others have said, and not factor in all the 'chrome'. Someone said pull the chrome and sell it separate to get some additional money out of it.

If you're in no hurry post it up at 17K and see if you get any 'nibbles'. It can't hurt to give it a go.

A friend of mine just traded in his '09 Fat Boy for a '10 Ultra, and knew he wouldn't get one dime extra for the gimcracks and geegaws he had put on, pulled 'em off, and is selling them on CL...Yes, that's a drag, but it's the only real way to get some sort of real return on his money.

In the case of the OP, it's not like you can pull off the engine mods, wheels, and stuff like that...

Thanks guys i can understand what you are saying about bumping up engine but i'am 62 years old my reason wasn't racing. it was just trying to get a little more passing power when traveling. I'am about t 270 and my wife is about 180 a lot of beef on it and pulled small trailer.i have maintenance records to prove it was taken care of. I know chrome is not worth much on resale just trying to get what everybody thinks a fair price is.i don't want to set on it forever I got 2010 screaming eagle ultra setting next to it only reason i'am selling the 09

Veekness,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. A high-performance bike wasn't built to be *****-footed. It was ridden hard. It would DETRACT from the value in my book. The things I MUST see in an ad when buying a bike: Completely stock, Original owner, never wrecked or laid down.

If you already have another bike and your not in a strap for cash. I say list it at seventeen and put in that add that you have another bike and will entertain all offers. You may get a good one.

Yep, pal, them's the best ones to get... In fact, for me, depending upon other things, it could well be a deal breaker! The OP in this case cites his age as being evidence that he isn't a hot rodder, but I've seen many an old man jammin' down the public right of way at high RPM...while I respect the reason the OP increased performance, for me, getting more performance on a touring machine doesn't necessarily mean increasing cubic inches...I'd personally feel better if I was looking at a bike that had the cams changed out with no top end work. Yeah, others may not feel the same way. But when the top end is touched, that's when I turn around and find that stocker that you're talkin' about...
