And the head: CD receiver with built-in amplifier (18 watts RMS CEA-2006/50 peak x 4 channels)

So I am guessing I want the radio (50 peak) to be less than the speaker (70 peak) ???

yea. but check for the radio's RMS. You want to ffind a combination that is close to each other to the the maximum performance from both sets. They try and fool you by putting high wattage but what really matters is the RMS wattage. If the radio is higher than the speakers, it will blow you speakers. that goes for amps to.. I dont know to much about ohms. Hope that helps.

Just remember that radio mfrs. are like HP peeps, they exaggerate. Speaker mfrs. are your mom, they worry about you getting hurt. A 200w peak radio (4x50) is going to be about 17-18 w rms per channel. The speakers mfrs. have to deal with crappy (power spikes) amps & other things so they are always conservative. 50 w rated speakers can handle the output of a 4x50 head unit all day long. One thing to note is if you spend huge bucks for say, 200w speakers-a head unit supplying them 18w isn't going to get you the volume you want and the sound may still be awful. An amp running in the red zone trying to power really good speakers can cause as much distortion as a cheap speaker does on it's own. Talk to Wayne (Firecap) on this site if you need better knowledge on this stuff, and also some really nice audio choices.

Thanks Glenn,

I talked to Wayne this morning. I think I have a plan. I will start with a good radio and 2 good 6x9s. If I don't like the sound I will add an arc amp.

Sounds like a good plan, that way you won't be wondering "did I really need an amp" like if you went with one blind. I don't have much experience with current 6x9s but I know Wayne does.

I am a new owner/rider. I learned a ton talking to Mike & Patrick at Biketronics. I went with their entire system with Sony head, 6.5 speakers, 125w amp, and a Sirius sat radio system. I love this set up and install was straight forward. I can still use my grip controls for everything. The sound rock at highway speeds.

6x9 sounds like a big hole for a fairing. Does it come that way or are you fabbing it up? The 6.5 Biketronics sound really good, sure you need 6x9? Good luck with your install. EW

I have a RKC, so no grip controls. There are several companies that make a fairing that take 6x9 speakers, so I didn't have to fab anything.
