Question Shaving bagger fender rivets

What is the right way to shave and fill the front fender rivets on a bagger fender? The obvious way is to weld the bracket to the fender, drill out the rivets and fill em with putt. There are obviously lots of ways to do it- which is the right way so the filler dosen't fall out in a couple of years or so the weld marks dont show? I'm fixin to get 'er painted so now's the time to shave the rivets!

You can drill out the rivets, and weld right thru those holes, as well as on the backside. Then grind it smooth and have it painted.

Bondo or filler always runs the risk of popping out.

I'm with you 100% on getting rid of the rivets when repainting the fender--surprised more folks don't do this when repainting their bikes.

A word of caution; unless you know what you're doing, it's not hard to distort the fender in the process of welding the bracket. My buddy wanted to do this project for me as a favor when I did my repaint project earlier this year and that's what happened--fender distorted by too much heat. I bought a RWD aftermarket fender and went with it; better look because it's lower than the OEM fender/bracket combination.

Suggestion: find a body shop to do it for you and pay the $100 or so to someone who knows what they're doing.

I've never had a problem just tacking the brackets from inside the fender. I then drill out the rivets, and weld the holes shut from both sides. A little grinding and some filler and it's good to go. I've probably done this 100 times over the years, and never once had a problem with it.....

How about some nice closeups of that shaved fender. I wished I'd done that, and kicked myself ever since. Next time for sure. Now's the time to do it.

What about using what they use for bonding panels on the newer vehicles? I don't remember exactly what it is but they used it on Trucks when the replaced a bedside on the Second Chance Silverado. You could use that to bond the bracket to the fender and the fill the holes. All I know for sure is I wish I had made that mod, sanding around those rivits SUCKS!
