I agree. My Dealer installs tender hookups on all bikes sold, noticed mine is fused for 7.5 amps. This one above is rated 15 amps, with bigger gauge wire. This would be a smart move as you may later choose to run accessories off this plug that could blow the smaller fuse, like some small air compressors or heated stuff. You could always use the hookup that comes with the deltran charger on another bike or even a mower or something... I use the "HD Smartcharger", 30 bucks I think.
Get some Gerbing heated gear, wire the connector to your battery & locate the other end where it'll be convenient when you're riding. Then buy the adapter to adapt the battery tender to the Gerbing connector. Two functions for one wire..............
Deltran; tender jr. 24/7, 365 unless out and about.
Ditto here Lionsm13,
Here's my setup: There's a nice oblong hole under the seat where I ran the Battery Tender pigtail for quick connect/disconnect... The Junior has never let me down.
Special thanks to all here on the forum! After much research, I settled on the Battery Tender Plus unit. I went to the Deltran website and copied the link and emailed to my son for my Christmas gift. We are traveling over Christmas, so we celebrated here with our immediate family last night. Guess what I got? You guessed it. I installed the permanent lead onto the battery in about 20 minutes with no issues. This is my first bike (and believe it or not) I had to break out the manual to figure out how to take the seat off, etc. It was super easy and it works like a charm.
Thanks again for all of your input and help making the right decision!!
SJC, glad it worked out for you. Any of the ones mentioned are better than none, I alternate my charger around to keep batteries topped off. This can really make a difference on Riding Mower batteries, most come with a one year warranty - mine has been on my mower since '07! I always make sure to hook up to what I know I am going to use the day or so before (planned ride, yard work day, etc.) and when it's crank time, it's a great feeling when she ZZZINGS over :>P
I have to say, I bought 4 new bikes from different dealerships, NJ, NY and Fla. All came with the charging plug. As far as the 3 hole plug, if you look at the cover you will see the 3rd hole is for the cover plug. Only the middle and ground is used.
Hmmmm...guess I better look at battery tender Have been using automatic charger for the job
You should NOT be using an automatic charger to maintain your battery. Automatic chargers are intended to restore a battery that has lost charge completely or is too low to start your motorcycle. It provides too high a current to your battery to be used for maintaining the battery all the time.

I can assure you that plugging in the battery tender every time you park the bike is NOT overkill. I was replacing batteries every two years when I did not use a battery tender. My bike went through three batteries from 2001 to 2007. When I installed the fourth (and currently last) battery in 2007, I bought a battery tender and plug it in every time I park the bike. I started doing this because a friend of mine recommended it. He has battery tenders for every one of his toys (five motorcyles and three snowmobiles) and plugs them in every time that particular toy is parked. His 2004 Dyna is still on its original battery. And, his ladies' 2002 Fat Boy is still on its original battery. The key is being fanatical about plugging in the battery tender every single time. Personally, I’ll never again be without one and every bike I own will have one. I even recently installed one in my truck which isn’t being driven that much now days.

Okay, so I have this cigarette lighter thing behind the second cylinder (stock I believe). I thought I can use it other way around and charge my battery through it. Bought that "pig tail" from the charger quick connector to the cigarette lighter thing on the other end and plug it. Now my parking lights are illuminating all the time weakly when the charger is connected that way. Is it normal? Does it charge at the same time or are those lamps using all the charger can deliver? The bike is 2010 Road King Classic.
