If you're "on the clock', you have to understand .... your time is theirs. You are covered under their insurance policy. To an employer ... strict rules when it comes to worker safety = lower incidences = lower rates. It all comes down to what it will cost THEM. Make no mistake ... They are covering their own butts by covering yours.

However, while you are NOT on their 'clock' ... and you are travelling to and from work .. they can not dictate to you which mode of transportation you can use under any labour law. That is a matter of personal choice. You could sky dive if you wanted to.

Keep in mind, once again ... they may not appreciate you driving up to their professional type building with the glittering glass facade and manicured lawn, on your "hog" in your "hog gear" with the stereotyped negatory biker "attitude", spinning your tires and spitting rocks at other vehicles in the parking lot, crushing your beer can on your forehead after taking the last gulp and pitching it into the glass fountain in the front foyer and belching "Sorry I'm late!".

That one may provide them the grounds for some disciplinary action.

This is the sort of anti freedom crap that is becoming the way of the world.

Certian people like to tell others what to do. Cagers who make the choice not to ride somehow feel they have the right to tell others what to do.

If you arent on the clock they cant tell you what to do.

If you are on the clock and they expect you to use your private vehicle for work purposes then they still cant tell you what to do. If they have got a problem with your choice of private vehicle they need to provide a hire car or company vehicle.

What if you didnt even own a car?? - could the company force you to buy one?? Of course not.

On rare occasions I've taken a personal vehicle, truck or bike, to co. schools, events, staff meetings etc.
I used to get a relief man to cover for me so I'd leave my co vehicle for him.Only stipulation our contract says personal vehicle must have liability ins.,forget the min. amount think it's 100k.

If your being paid for that time, then they can restrict what you drive, if your not being paid for that time, then they cannot tell you what to drive, its that simple.

if they require you to go to a meeting, and its several hours drive and they are paying you a wage to get there, be in the meeting an get back, yes, they can restrict you to a company car, you are on their time after all.

if they are simply paying you for milage to and from, and a wage only during the meeting then they have overstepped into your personal life and may be in fact breaking the law.

Where i am at, when i have to go out of town to meetings, i am able to drive what i wish, im not on the clock and get paid for my mileage only..but, when im on the clock and i must go someplace, i must take the company van, cannot smoke and track my miles and a host of other things.

Put up with the rules or quit, they have the power, Unless there's a whole bunch of you that ride to work. It does suck though, glad my bosses, don't care cause the Army covers me, not them. Good thing about being a retiree.

Ah, yeah I would sue for harrassment. My company has similar policy but it says I cant rent a bike instead of a car while travelling on company business. I just take vacation days when I am in a place I want to ride and renatals are available.

I can't even ride my bike to work, but I'm a rig welder so I kinda need my truck. Right now I'm not working anyhow.

As others has said, if you are on my time, you'll do what I tell you, or go somewhere else. Luckily, I'm salaried, so I am not paid for Saturday, so when we have our management meetings, I ride my bike, weather permitting, and saves the company a tank of fuel and I get an enjoyable day of riding. Monday thru friday, it's the pickup, that's that.
