I just noticed the slot on seat of my Street Glide. Apparently you can slip a backrest into there? If so, is there other hardware required? What is the procedure for installing the backrest?

Yes there is a bracket at the bottom of the backrest that has to be mounted to the bike under the seat. If you buy a new setup, everything you need will come with the backrest. The seat has to be removed.
