I am thinking about ordering a solo seat for my electraglide from c&c seats i do not know if i should order it with or without gel what do you guys out there whith gel seats think
The only problem I have had with (Saddleman) Gel seat is you cannot park them where the sun will beat down on the seat. I know that is a very hard thing NOT to do but the gel absorbs and stores a massive amount of heat and will release it back into your butt as you sit down on the seat and ride. It gives new meaning to Butt Burn!
I agree with the heat issue, I live in Las Vegas, I also had the saddleman with the gel insert, sitting in the sun all day it got pretty hot, and my butt would get really uncomforatably hot on the way home from work.
Along with the above mentioned heat problems, the gel also spreads out/ gets thinner over time and so you start feeling the seat frame/ other hard things...makes for a very uncomfortable ride.
I would suggest air instead of gel as the cushioning agent...jmo...10 years on a gel insert...never again!
I just have the regular C&C fastback seat in leather. I also have the backrest. Its very comfortable. The longest day I have on it is a little over 800 miles. Stopped just for gas and to eat. I had no issues. I plan on doing an iron butt ride in the spring and will use that seat instead of the Sundowner I also have. I use the sundowner for rides with the wife. I personally would not recommend the Gel but that is just my opinion.
I am pushing the other half toward a Iron Butt ride this summer, I want to go on a ride vacation and the biggest issue is crossing Kansas out and back, I do not wish to see that state for two days both ways.
On the OP; I have a Mustang 2pc on the King, firmer than most seats out there but comfortable on distance. I tried a gel inserted seat from a co-workers bike, didn't like the 'mush' after 100miles or so and it became irritating so went back to firm seat. The passenger pillion on the set I have is very comfortable to the other half as I have asked, it seems to be softer than my solo.
It really is the shape of the seat rather than softness that makes for comfort. A good example is the wood rocker my grandmother sat in all day long. Hard as wood, right shape and angle to fit a body. It's the pressure points that kill you. The gell tries to reduce the impact of the pressure points, but, in the end, a bad seat (for you) is a bad seat. I've got the sundowner touring seat on my street glide. It fits me really well.
