I don't need a sissy bar since I'm always solo so that is out of the equation. Installing a rack on the TP is a good idea. What kind of weight can that hold?
The sissy bar wasnt recomended for your passenger. If you make it to the stage where you consider luggage for your rack, you'll come to the conclusion that most {if not all} quality motorcycle luggage is designed to be used with a sissy bar/rack combination to support against wieght shift.

The avg. rack is rated at about 11 lbs.Adding a rack to the top of a tour pac will not gain you additional wieght rating. The tour pac/luggage sits on the rack/base.Reguardless its still around 11 lbs.

Ah, gotcha!

That Motherwell rack looks pretty good. Does anyone know which one would be for my bike?

From the site:

7" CHROME SOLO LUGGAGE FOR ROAD KING MODELS 97-UP
PRODUCT CODE: MWL-430

Anyone have any pics of it mounted? I'd like to see how it mounts on the seat.

As others have posted, you really need the sissy bar to secure down T-bag type luggage.
Don't forget to figure in that cost of a good Nelson Riggs or T-Bag in your setup.
Last year at our campground at Sturgis, many left detachable tour paks and backrests at the campground.
Hit the hills solo or with something hot holding on tight.

I went ahead and ordered the chopped TP, solo TP rack, four point docking in gloss black, TP lock, and chopped TP backrest pad (smooth.) That should cover it. I'll eventually purchase the solo fender rack either from HD or Motherwell.

Cheapest I found was $1008.00 shipped to my door from Chicago HD. Zanottis was about $20.00 more.
