Default RE: Oil Use?

I lost a litle over a 1/2 quart during break in. No big deal. This is typical of HD engines. Since oil is one of the cooling factors alot is eaten up by the high friction of new engines. Some oil is also lost through the crank breather as this vents the crankcase up into the air cleaner. After initial break-in, oil consumption will go down significantly. At my 1K service I had SYN3 put in all three holes. Engine runs quietly and the tranny got smoother. But I am still switching to Amsoil for the engine and primary, and Redline shockproof heavy gear lube for the trans. Most of the old hands on this forum have reccomended this combo and I don't argue with experience. You can get these synthetic lubricants from a variety of sources. Check out the threads about oil in the forum tech section. You can go direct to www.amsoil.com also. But deffinately go synthetic.

during break in expect some consumption. The break in period is to seat the rings to the cylinders. It also may have been low from the get go. Always check your oil hot. Harleys are a dry sump system and while sitting, some oil will drain into the crank case.

I will second Mac's comments about Amsoil! I've been using this oil for over six years, and the performance has been superb! Synthetic is the only way to go! There have been many comparison tests done between Amsoil, Mobil 1, Syn 3, and regular HD oil. And, Amsoil blew them all out of the water in all wear tests.

Thanks Guys,

I go in for my 1000 mile service tomorrow and I feel better knowing I hadn't bought a bike that was going to be a problem. Thanks for all the advice.

Ride Safe

Jeff
