I use a 1/4¨12 point socket and as long as you don't over tighten the pin you should have no problems. The pad pins will wear out before the bolt head strips out.
I couldn't find a 1/4" 12 point socket in our town, but have always had success with a 1/4" 12 point box end. More trouble, but it will get the job done.
