Default RE: Changing a belt

ORIGINAL: spikebetrayer

i have an 06 classic and i picked up a rock in my belt ..so i have to change mine also.i will also do this repair myself.
If the rock damage is toward the middle of the belt, you might want to reconsider changing the belt just yet. When I first bought my bike with about 10k on the odometer I caught a rock that penetrated the belt about 1/8" from the middle. After removing the rock, I mixed some JB Weld (epoxy), stuffed it thoroughly in the hole, and let it form a small glob on the outside of the belt. Then, I took a small piece of plastic kitchen wrap and sandwiched it between the sprocket and belt, leaving it in that position overnight, which allowed the shape of the sprocket to form the epoxy to the contours of the belt. The plastic wrap kept the epoxy from bonding to the sproket.

This fix has held until today and it looks like it did in 1997, about 94k miles later. There has been no deterioration of the original puncture and all you can see is a small glob of hardened epoxy in that location. If the puncture is toward the edge there is less chance the puncture will not spread, but it might still be worth a try. Just keep an eye on it.

Another thing I just thought of. I have a 1.5" belt, whereas you have the new narrow type, probably 1" or less. I don't know how this would affect such a fix, but if I had your bike I would certainly give it a try.

What special tools do you need to get the 'rings' off the main gear assembly?
And do you need a special tool to 'pull' any of these precious wheels of metal off?

I used a small awl to pry the ring out.... I was looking at the wrong ring....
Hard to get a 1 1/2" and 1 3/16" socket... Almost to the assembly itself!

Instead of making the jig to stop the chain - I used a piece of maple - worked fine.

I finally finished changing the belt. It is quite the job. I know my socket set much better than I care to.
The pages from www.harleyhog.co.uk were quite helpful. It took quite a while, and I had to buy a few tools.
The large sockets, 1 1/2" and 1 5/16" I believe were only sold at a speciality automotive store, and I had to buy some extra extensions
for the socket set to reach some places. Plus I had to get a motorcycle jack. So it did cost me some money,
but now I know my bike a bit better than I did before, and it seems to ride a bit better as well.

Thanks for the words of advice.

Dave
